Ruben Dias - Benfica confirm sale to City

I tend to view these things a bit more pragmatically (you can read that as happy clapper if you want haha). I totally agree that last summer not getting a CB was a criminal decision. But that's gone now, the question for me was how they rectified that mistake this window. Buying two, including one who is proven in the our league, is a huge step forward for me.

The question of quality (Dias vs Kounde vs Koulibaly) is difficult to judge until Dias starts playing for us, but I'm totally convinced that he's a big big upgrade defensively on Otamendi and Stones.

I hope he is, I really do, I'm just yet to be convinced this transfer is being made for the right reasons.

They didn't think he was the CB for us last season when he was available for €66m. Now we've spent all summer looking at other players only to arrive at Dias a week before the window closes (2 weeks after the Benfica CL loss) in a transfer that miraculously helps Jorge Mendes out greatly by getting him paid several times over.

A lot of the reports said Dias had a dodgy second half of the season, so its not like his performances reached another level where he was suddenly worth the money.

All of these things make me weary of the signing, it has all the hallmarks of a panic buy about it.

And despite the dogs abuse I've received for saying we would have won a lot more if we'd sorted out the CB issue properly 4 years ago, it has cost us seriously in the CL, league and FA Cup.

The stakes are really high here. This transfer could be the difference between league and CL or a repeat of last season, Pep leaving out the back door and another year of this team's best years being wasted.

Dias now looking much the likelier, and cheaper, option to join City , if only because of Sevillas 'fee stance' on Kounde . but an interesting comparison article regarding both players here ....... with a little warning to City regarding Uniteds purchase of Lindelof at the tail end of it!

Accurate article overall, just need to add one thing.
Lindelof was good here at Benfica, but he never reached the level that Ruben is right now and neither he was the leader of our defense like Ruben is.
Lindelof used to play alongside Luisão, which was our captain for a long time, whereas Ruben has been our ‘captain’ for the last season and a half despite not wearing the armband.
So, Rúben leaves a better player and clearly more of a leader when compared to Lindelof when he left us.

He was available for €66m last summer why are you talking about £100m?

And why are you talking about Otamendi moving or no one foreseeing CB being a problem? That's comolete bullshit. Kompany left, pep said we needed a CB, everyone on here said we needed a CB and we didn't get one and predictanly it cost us.
He renewed his contract last year mate, after Benfica realised he is in demand they renewed his contract the same window and boosted it up to €100m. Nothing complicated there.

Calm again and ready slowly, Otamendi could not get a move because of his wage issues, and it remained an issue this year. No one is denying we did not need a CB, but our option was limited to just Maguire at the time as there were no free foreign spots. Fortunately for us the rags paid 80m for him, and even though Pep was allegedly left frustrated, we went into the season with Stones, Laporte, Otamendi, Garcia, Fernandinho. Stones and Laporte were expected to carry most of the work load for Prem, but we could not have predicted that Laporte would have an ACL injury, it could all have been planned well, but we cannot also throw big money on names like Maguire hoping it'd work out.

Hence its evident whatever panned out, and in the end even though it took a while this window we went and got not 1 but 2 centre halves. Sounds like addressing the issue well, whether you like the signings is up to you. I'm sure they'll admit not being able to get a centre half last summer cost them, it's no surprise, but not every season can go well planned and executed perfectly, you're just having unrealistic expectations if that's the case.

I agree. I think Pep is hugely pissed off at the moment, or at least has been since returning - look at his press conferences! He looks devoid of any enthusiasm.
Disagree.Pep hates all aspects of pre match q & a and would sooner be anywhere than talking to the fucking press and its leaches.

He renewed his deal in September 2019.

He was available for 66m euro last summer when we wanted a CB and the club weren't interested.

Otamendi didn't need to move last season. Kompany left, we had a space for a CB. We would have gone from Laporte, Kompany, Otamendi & Stones to Laporte, Dias, Otamendi and Stones.

If we got Dias at the start of the window for £50m + Otamendi, having not been linked to everyone else, everyone would have been lauding Txiki for this transfer.

It's a good deal and whilst he's perhaps not quite what we expected following months of being linked to others, it's done now, so everyone should be fully behind him.

It's obvious the club have been thinking about him as an option for sometime given our links to him last season, so this isn't some desperation signing in my eyes (despite the fact he may have not been first choice this summer).

Dias in an upgrade on Stones, Otamendi, Fernandinho and Garcia - plain and simple. Throw in the fact Laporte is back and we have a geniunely quality back up option in Ake and we're exponentially better at CB for this season.

I was very keen on Kounde because of his age and potential - I do think he will become a superstar and probably will replace Ramos at Real next year.
Real a year ago splashed 300m and is linked to players like Mbappe and Camavinga who will cost tons of money.
I hope we will be back for Kounde next year.
I absolutely love this kid and I'm gutted that we are not signing him.
He could play for us as DM.
