Rugby League Season 2023

There was no “swapping ends” at Central Park pal,if you’d ever been there you’d know that, not making it out only you were unruly,as Hull KR were the same, but my views are far from delusional
I'm a Saints supporter and quite often we did swap ends en-masse in the late 1980s, but the only times we did was when it pissed it down with rain. However, many did stay on the open terrace. Obviously. once the new stand was built in 1991, that was the end of that and I was much happier with our perch at the other end. So, for Lefty to suggest that he changed ends every years from 1986 to 1998 cannot be right.

I'd agree on the Warrington fans of the era. They, along with Featherstone, Hull FC and Hull KR were the most unruly.

Wilderspool was a very rough place to go. The 1988 Challenge Cup tie we had there was one of the worst experiences I had there. I got punched there in 2001 for merely wearing the wrong colours and our coach got bricked in 2002.

Even now, it's one place where I will not wear my colours because of the moronic abuse it attracts. I've never had that issue in Wigan.

In 35 years of attending the game, I've seen more incidents at Warrington than any of the other grounds put together.

Of course, I could be construed as biased, but I've lots of good mates who are Warrington fans, I used to socialise in the town (when it was a good night out) and I was the secretary of the MCFC Warrington Supporters Club Branch. I've no beef, in that respect, but they've always had an 'element'.

Anyway moving on from the bollocks ……..
Paul Wellens and Matty Peet both speaking out this week at the pathetic state of the official / rules and super league board . Wellens not holding back after losing key players for the season. Valid points made by both semi final losing coaches backed up by impartial leading figures in the game . Hopefully changes arising in the close season !

Be careful mate, very careful, the tears will be out if we continue to tell truths

It wasn’t their fault though .
I had to laff at his response the sheer hypocrisy lol
Where have I said it wasn't our fault.
These are merely local gobshites, purporting to be Wire fans. If they were matchgping regulars, they'd be behaving the same way, when they visited Central Pk. As I said, I don't recall any violence between our sets of fans during that era, and I went to virtually every game.

It's quite easy to comprehend, even for a Wiganer

“We had some local gob shites” typical bin dipper speak . You then blamed some Wigan because they are no “angels “ I sort of give up then it was like reading some stereotype shite off the Anfield Wrap or the other cult bin dipper hate filled site which I refuse to pronounce!
Ffs man take a look at yourself haha

It's very easy to suggest that anybody causing trouble isn't a "match-going regular". That's a cop-out that everybody uses.

"Pondlife Corner" at the HJ has its nickname for a reason. It's still the one place now that our supporters get nasty and vitriolic abuse in the streets. It's the one club that has repeated form.

Despite the Saints-Wigan rivalry being far bigger, we've never had any problems there in the 35 years that I've been going. Warrington is a very different animal, and in the 1980s, their reputation went before them, and all over the RL world, they were bracketed with Featherstone and the two Hull clubs. Not for generally unruliness, but for violence.

Unfortunately, we at Saints are now starting to see an element creeping in, and it's spoiling my enjoyment of away games. Not in terms of fighting, but all round goading and nastiness. They are our supporters, though. They are our problem.

Good post !

…see!

There are a lot of links between City and Wire, not any club or fan links but just parallels in history and there are a lot links between United+Liverpool and Wigan+Saints (not just success, but the way in which their fans deal with being successful):

Record attendance in the country; 35 year run without a major trophy broken in consecutive years at Wembley; more down to earth than the Sky Redshirts, summed up with the line ‘lived in the shadows of Wigan, St Helens and to a degree Widnes hahaha in other words shite’ could be the biggest example of exactly what a Rag would come out with ‘City lived in the shadows of United, Liverpool and even Stockport hahaha in other words shite’.

Neither City or Wire fans go round calling other clubs shite because they happen to have won less than them, City fans don’t give shit to SheffWeds (random example) fans for winning less, Wire fans don’t give shit to Wakefield (random example) fans for winning less. Can you say the same for United and Liverpool fans in footy or Wigan and St Helens fans in RL?…

If you think Wire are a shit club, then the sport of rugby league is shit and we might as well as just pack it in and sack RL off because it’s failed.

When you look at major trophies won: Bradford (14 major trophies), Huddersfield (13 major trophies), Wire (12 major trophies), Hull (11 major trophies), Widnes (10 major trophies), Swinton (9 major trophies)… it’s like calling City, Spurs, Chelsea, Everton and Villa shite in football.

They’re the next tier down from the three most successful clubs and a credit to the sport. So are Salford, Hull KR, Leigh, Catalans, Oldham etc. and even the old defunct Hunslet and [various name] Rangers (both of whom had won more than St Helens in the first eight decades of rugby) as well as other clubs. All good clubs with good histories that contribute to a great sport.

Calling clubs shite because they haven’t won as much as you is classless and straight out of the United and Liverpool way of supporting a sports team.
Taking a step back from the aggro, Saints fans don't actually take that condescending manner with all other clubs in terms of having won more trophies, whereas Rags and Liverpool supporters, and to a lesser extent, the Pies do. In fact, Wigan do it to Saints all the time

Nobody took the piss out of Leigh on Saturday for being a club that hasn't won much over the years, and apart from a few bottle throwing knobheads, pretty much all of us wished them well at Wembley, although I do wonder if the Asiata-gate scandal will turn a few heads towards Hull KR now.

Widnes are probably our closest geographical neighbours but there is no condescending attitude towards them.

Similarly, we've never taken the piss out of Salford, Hull, Hull KR, Huddersfield, Castleford, Wakey or anybody else.

There are three clubs that are on the receiving end. They are Wigan and Warrington, because they are local rivals, and Leeds, because we've had a rivalry at the top of the table in relatively recent times. Those rivalries work both ways.

The piss-take to winning less extends to one club only. Warrington. That's just part of the banter that comes with a rivalry. It's a stick to beat them with and we use it. If somebody is going to dish out abuse, as they do, then you don't just see their cards. You match them and then you raise the stakes until there's a winner.

Wire aren't a shit club, but the fact that they haven't been Champions for 68 years despite their stature in the game is the kind of thing that banter is made of, and if they wanted to be creative, they could also point to the fact that even though we have a virtual monopoly over them at their place, they've beaten us in every Final and semi-final that we've ever met in going back to 1976.

Wanky wanky Warrington
Everyone sings it . It must get to um obviously pmsl .
Never met a Wigan fan who is slightly similar to a rag or dipper , humble and down to earth deffo , small town and proud mentality nothing else . Warrington fans easiest to wind up by far ! St Helens fans most entitled in my experience ! Anyone wants to see Wigan fans first hand get in the Brickmakers pub Springfield for a couple of pints before a match . Every super league club away fans come in and have the craic even Saints and Wire ! All friendly never any trouble and right in Wigans back yard . :)
Prob with Warrington is the fact the town hasn’t got a football team of note so they get a higher proportion of shit fans following the rugby ( trouble makers) Saints similar but not as bad .
I went to watch Warrington Town in a couple of their big games last season and they are now only two steps from the Football League. If you ever go to the HJ now and wonder where some of their "shit fans" have gone, fear not. I have the answer for you. :-D
