Rugby World Cup 2023

I thought the ref let the Welsh get away with murder there. And build that lead. Cheating twat
Wales gave penalties away for fun, it didn't cost them because Fiji haven't got a goal kicker they trust. Not having a kicker cost Fiji at least a 10 point win, but the ref, should have been tougher with Wales though no doubt, gave the Welsh far too many warnings.

Anyone know the penalty count?

17-9
The warning on the Welsh line should have come one penalty before it was probably.

The lack of kicker probably means a late try wouldn't have been kicked, and a non-Fiji side would have been kicking the penalties.

Fairly amazing tackle stats: 248 by Wales, 70 by Fiji. But Wales missed 33 (12%) and Fiji missed 23 (25%)

The warning on the line. Stay behind the line. The tackle was made by a player who went early and was over the line ( marginally) as the ball was played I thought.

I think this is the thing - this happens so much that the ref has to decide that they were off and it made a difference while trying to keep an eye on about 6-8 players around the ball. Has the attacker put his hands on the ball to play it and has the defender gone early? Are his feet over the line? So many questions.

It would need a lengthy slow-motion analysis to know what things are given for and what aren't. It happens a lot in close matches (as I'm sure you know!) and almost every time one side feel the ref was lenient to the defence!

We won but the ref was fucking appalling, most have been in this world cup.
It wasnt just decisions against Fiji either, Fijians were off their feet at rucks all game, practically doing hand stands to get the ball. We should have had more cards, thats not even up for discussion & even though we ended up winning,i feel desperately sorry for Fiji.
Something needs to change with these fucking refs

Favoured the Welsh throughout. Doubt we will see that pillock reffing again in
the WC.
You will, the appointments for each group game are already confirmed. They won't pull a referee off a game they're already appointed to unless it's injury or some corruption scandal. Shitshows like that one will make him less likely to referee any knockout games though.
Although tbh the only good ref performances so far have been in the Italian, Irish and France v NZ games. So they may be short on referees.

Plenty haven't had their turn yet. We've only had 8 matches out of 40 group matches.

Great first weekend of the world cup. France v NZ wasn't anything like the game I was expecting. Looked like two teams very much trying to suss each other out and became a tactical battle at times. When things occasionally opened up it was a thrill. The David Silva through ball to the wing and then that tackle from nowhere by Mo'unga was a real highlight and showed the class of both teams. NZ will have to do a lot to win this WC, but they'll always be there or there abouts.

Great win for England considering our form and the sending off - which shouldn't have been a red. From the WC final in 2019 and 4 years of struggling to evolve or improve, it looks like the big stage is giving them all that kick up the arse they needed. We didn't get to see much of the backs for obvious reasons, but hopefully we score a few tries and get a bit of confidence over the remaining pool games.

Ireland - superb as we know they are, and should win this World Cup but can they get over the mental block?
South Africa - my favourites to win it because they know how to.
Scotland - played like England before the WC! If they could have taken just a couple of those attacking lineouts they'd have possibly won the game, but SA probably would have still found a way!
Aussies - didn't watch them!
Wales - very lucky to win, and largely thanks to Fiji failing to take advantage of good positions and not taking 3 points on offer.

This World Cup draw has made it an intriguing competition. England and Wales despite the turmoil before the tournament could be in the semi finals whilst Ireland and France are out!
