Running thread

For all you seasoned long-distance runners.

Signed up to the Strava run a half every quarter. How often do you run the half marathon distance?

I've been loosely following a training plan to build up my distances, which is a 10-week plan but I feel that once I've got to the distance I could probably run a HM every month. Is that wise?
Depends what you're training for, i.e. what are your goals? Why do you want to run a half every quarter?

If you want to participate in halves or marathons, you would be doing an LSR (long slow run) once a week as part of your training. If you're aiming to run a half marathon every quarter, then monthly would be fine but it seems more logical to do at least one per week.

But again, it depends on loads of factors like your time available, your overall goals, motivation etc. If you don't want to do a lot of running, you'd be OK if your weekly long run is 10 or 11 miles. If you do these frequently, then it's not much more to do a half, especially if you time it right.

Thought id try something different yesterday, so set my strata watch to 5x1k intervals with a few minutes rest in-between. ran round the local pitches as its 1k around and fairly flat. managed times of 4.16, 4.09, 4.20, 4.24 & 4.38. Fair to say I was absolutely blowing after each interval and my legs are feeling it today. Anyone else do this kind of training every so often?

Doing it more as a challenge rather than training for a specific event. I've done 5 or 6 HMs over the last few years and I cycle a lot too, so time availability is the biggest factor.

My point really is I've never continually clocked up long distances unless I was training towards an event. Lockdown has done away with the events for now, which got me to thinking that once I got back up to the distance, I would like to keep clocking them up. Once a quarter coincided with a club that popped up on Strava but why stop there? Once a month felt logical but as you and others have already said, it's possible to do it more frequently - just need to ensure I don't stress the body.

I think I will do the one I planned towards the end of this month then see how I fee. If ok, I'll do another in March and take it from there.

Did a fair bit of this last year. Stick with it as you'll find your times will be more consistent and as you get used to the cardio nature of intervals you'll either recover quicker or be able to do more intervals. I did a minute on and a minute recovery and got up to 17 intervals. warm up and warm down is vital.

Google Phil Maffetone or have a trawl 6-12 months back through this thread and there's some chat on this kind of training.

Just got back from Heaton, felt a slight bit better again as niggles definitely getting less than they have been. Best time since August! Heading in right direction and just want to get back into the 25/26 minute ranges.

5k myself this morning, 26 minutes, legs felt tired after the 2 hill sessions i'd done earlier this week so hopefully i can get back to sub 24's like i was pre-Xmas.

I tend to a longish run about 10 miles most Sundays and aim to do a HM about once a month.
For me thats just to keep ticking over so when races start up again Im already at the distance and can then work on covering the distance at a quicker pace.
Just dont increase your distance too much build up gradually.

Well done I tend to a mix of 800s and 400s so say 4 x 800 with 60 to90 sec breather between each rep,then 4 x 400 m
