Running thread

Did that one a few weeks ago - half the people there tourists going for their I !

Happy Christmas all - anyone else going off to do a Parkrun this morning? If you are, have a good one. No attempted PB malarkey for me today, just about jogging round and wishing everyone well (and working up an appetite for later :-)

It's my local one so also do a lot of my training up there. So local in fact, that I don't have to leave home until 0850 on Parkrun days!
It does seem to attract a lot of tourists, but it's also a good one for novices, being flat & relatively straight.

Yep, agreed - I liked it - definitely PB territory - as long as you get near the front at the start!

All the best.

I finally managed to do it
I walked 365 half marathons with a calender year. 13.1 miles x 365

completed on and around 12th December.

Since my laat posting the momentum I was going at slowed down. Due to a nasty fall, which in part caused by my glucoma.

Then I got a cold, and then normal life duties got in the way.

Despite this I am very proud of myself. I've got to know Barcelona better than the locals (haha which I am most likely am these days).
I've given tips to the tour guides.

I may try again and next time do it for charity and to make awareness for glucoma. Trust me it's a shit thing to have and I would even struggle to wish it on my worsest enemy.

Happy Xmas blues.

Wow, superb effort there - very well done - that’s a lot of commitment to put it mildly.

All the best in general and specifically for coping with your glucoma.

Taking the xmas holidays to rest this hamstring tendonitis - it's definitely eased up (given I could barely walk at one stage), but twinges now and again. Will hit the gym in the meantime (rowing and swimming is helping).

Wondering if I over stretched it in Yoga (during deep lunges as that's where I first noticed the pain in my lower thigh).
I do know returning to running will be hard though....always is after a break (try a short ease in run).

Looking new running shoes. I've always worn New Balance so think will stick with them. All I see is fuel cell or fresh foam. Not sure what either would benefit me as a causal 60 year old plodder who does 40-50 miles a month. Currently wear NB 680V6 and got another 100 miles or so in them. Looking a new pair to train in as thinking might do HM around March Budget of around £100. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Well done bud

Gutted won't get over 400 as too busy today, I'll take it though as 40 more than last year. Happy new year all

My 30th & final Parkrun of the year completed this morning at Peel Park in a very steady 31:25. Was a tad muddy this morning & part of the usual course beside the Irwell was actually under the Irwell. The Canada geese were sorting out the drainage in the lower fields!

As an aside, if you are thinking of making a fitness or diet New Year resolution, DON'T DO IT!

There's a number of reasons for this:

1. Why punish yourself at the most miserable time of the year?

2. There's a reason we eat hearty winter food in winter. Your body needs it! Save the salads for spring & summer. You'll also appreciate an extra couple of pounds to keep you warm when you're sat at a freezing cold railway station waiting for a cancelled train.

3. Don't give up booze in January. The small independent pubs & breweries are on their knees & need your custom. If you want to give up anything, give up going to large chain pubs, especially the one beginning with "W" who's owner looks like a deranged Thundercat. Pubs are also pleasant places to visit now all the once a year drinkers are out of the way.

4. Gyms will be full of once a year gym bunnies, most of who will give up after a couple of weeks when they realise they don't enjoy it or it's too hard work.

5. Starting running in January is not a good idea. There's not much daylight, the cold air will destroy your lungs & you'll probably injure yourself slipping in mud or on ice.

Instead, wait until Spring when you want to spend more time outdoors, you'll be naturally eating less, you'll have more energy, and you will have had time to consider what activity you enjoy.

Happy new year!

Unbelievable effort, congratulations.

Good year of running overall

Got PB in Parkrun, 5k, 10k and Half Marathon

Ran 167 days in a row before body gave up and illness kicked in

Have had a couple weeks off now and recharged for New Year

Will run every day except Monday and Fridays and prepare for Marathon in April

Three weeks off running due to injury and I am missing it incredibly. Had the last week off and have been lying in every day as without the running my energy levels have dropped. Stuck half a stone in weight on already and even though I have been following my physio exercises I know deep down the knee is still not working correctly.

Ironically the injury was not actually affecting my running but other activities such as climbing stairs/ladders etc. Very frustrating.

Mmmmm I’ve just signed up on Strava to a 5km run in January after not having run at all in 2022. I am quite fit for 55 years old (have cycled over 5000 miles this year) but I jacked in running after constantly pulling my calf muscles despite stretching/warming up pre-run. Anyway decided to give it a go again…

Best of luck, mate. My rant was obviously intended as being tongue in cheek!

Haha - deranged thundercat!!
Some good points there tbf, but ironically I started running in the midst of winters a few years ago which gave me the grounding to continue.

Same here mate. It's about 3 weeks for me too (hamstring tendonitis).
Good luck with returning - any idea how long until you're good to go?
I've been using rowing at the gym as my substitute running, alongside weights and yoga but hoping to kick back into running next week (light trail to test it out).

Planned a Park Run this morning but still cautious over my thigh tendonititis.
I also went out last night so wasn't wholly bought into the idea of going.

Turns out my alarm didn't go off so missed it anyway....putting it down to fate intervention there.

Here's to 2023 running!

Ah, fantastic mate! Very well done indeed. You should be very proud, plus I expect you are in great shape as well.
