Running thread

It's great to see so many achievements in here. Loads of great miles and healthy habits. It's very encouraging and inspiring to see the fruits of these efforts.

2022 has been somewhat of a fallow year for me. Training has been affected by several bouts of illness (including Covid three times!) and injuries including some cracked ribs which are still giving me grief. I also started an intensive new job a year or so ago and that has also made it extra hard to get the training in.

1,400 miles in total for the year, which is OK for me but not great. Didn't run any marathons; longest run was 18 miles. I don't think I took part in any organised races.

Still, I'll have done 30-odd miles this week so that brings me into the new year in a decent starting position for building fitness, especially as we start to get a bit more light.

I will be interested to see how you guys go into the new year. Are you planning to do anything different in terms of health and fitness, compared with 2022?
 
For me, 2022 saw 4300km on the bike, compared to 6000km last year. Too many holidays and losing a month to covid plus a slight boredom in cycling the same area caused the reduction.

December saw my best ever running month, 108km in total. Looking to up that to 120km in January, including a half marathon (by myself as I love the solitude, just me and my music).

No particular targets for 2023, perhaps avoid injury and I'd love to get below 12 stone, currently 12 and a half. Parkrun PB currently 24.45, despite my ageing (52), I think I can reduce that significantly. I'd like to do some swimming as well, maybe wait until February for the New Year madness to subside.

Some good points there tbf, but ironically I started running in the midst of winters a few years ago which gave me the grounding to continue.


Same here mate. It's about 3 weeks for me too (hamstring tendonitis).
Good luck with returning - any idea how long until you're good to go?
I've been using rowing at the gym as my substitute running, alongside weights and yoga but hoping to kick back into running next week (light trail to test it out).

To be honest I am probably going to pop out later, if only for 20 minutes, as I really need a bit of cardio training.

The physio said next appointment the 15th Jan to see if I am ready to step up to full training but to be honest I don’t see any evidence of improvement besides the strengthening of my glutes.

Well done on switching to other forms of exercise. Shows real commitment that.
 
Weather was fucking horrendous for Heaton Parkrun today, as bad rain as I’ve ever had the misfortune to run in, completely torrential for nearly the whole run and only last couple of mins it relented.

Managed to do the 4 at Heaton over festive period - Xmas Eve, Xmas Day, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day - so at least giving me a base for 2023.

Im doing dry Jan and 16/8 intermittent fasting as stuck on a good half stone over last month, added to another half I’d like to shift so got my target and see how I do by end of Jan.
 
2022 was a decent year. Jan to May regularly running 15 miles per week. Managed my first race since 2014 with a 10k in about 47 minutes which is not too bad for a 50+ vet.

Then replaced running with cycling May to October and clocked up around 2000 miles. A lot less than the glory days of racing and commuting 6000 miles a year but enough for me these days.

November 2022 to present and transitioned from cycling back to running. Managed 19 miles last week.

2023 plan is to run until April, increase the mileage and possibly another 10K then switch to cycling again in summer.

Basic plan is just enjoyment, health and fitness. I'm grateful to just be able to run and today's target is to be able to do so until I'm 60.

I run. I get a buzz. Easy.

I've banged on enough already probably but...

I cycle. I get a buzz. Easy.

I cycle up hills. I free wheel down hill. I get a buzz. Easy.

I build a fixed wheel bike. I can't free wheel and have to pedal continuously. I get a buzz. Easy.

I used to play football?

Swimming? Nah I hate that.

You get my drift. You run because you like it. There are other sports you could enjoy just as much?
 
2.5 miles yesterday at lunchtime. Then I noticed on social media a 5k freerun in local park this morning at 8. Registered and jogged mile there as warm up. Only 4 of us there including organiser. Theory is set off on 2 laps of park at 10 second intervals. Meant to be 5k but came up just short at 3.04 miles. I jogged the mile home as cool down. I really enjoyed it and probably wouldn't have gone out today if hadn't seen it advertised. Will definitely do it again as easy when working from home. The walk was me looking for the start

Been about 5 weeks since I stopped running due to lower thigh tendonitis (and it was sore a good few weeks before).

Was hoping to due a light park run this Saturday as my return (and a psychological return to normality after Xmas).
However, I was off to the gym last night (yoga) and was a little late so decided to step into a light run and noticed the bloody leg was still painful :(

I've rested it mainly (rowing, weights, yoga etc and a good blast on the massage gun made it feel better).

It's more of a bit sore than painful and still contemplating easy park run in the morning (but if 'smarts' I'll just stop).
Thoughts?

Have you seen a physio? If not, that's probably the way to go. We shouldn't really try to offer medical advice on here.
 
First Parkrun of the year at Stafford Isabel Trail completed in a very steady 31:14. I need to shift the extra 4 pounds I put on over Christmas to start improving again!

Weighed myself the other day and noticed I’d put 4 pounds on. Put two runs in this week and getting back to it solid from now on. First two after Christmas were killers.

Struggling a bit with my running fitness at the moment, and have been since 2 Parkruns in a row got cancelled back in December when it was icy.
I'm knackered after about 3km and have to start taking walking breaks, and once I start walking, I struggle to get back running any distance again.
I think I just need a bit of self discipline to tell myself I can't stop under any circumstances, and maybe a running buddy for my training runs.
I had the same issue with my swimming fitness post Xmas, but that has quickly returned back to previous levels.

It’s hard getting back to it after 3 weeks not doing it, I wasn’t disciplined enough to keep going out over Christmas. 3km is a barrier for me too, I’m hoping to get back to solid 5pms next week.

I haven't (and you're right re advice - was perhaps looking for affirmation that by running I'm doing the saintly thing!)

Always wary of getting into a physio loop due to costs (especially at the moment) but I probably should.

I took it v easy but still quite sore but I've desperately missed running so you tend to do daft things (like returning too early).

I'll see how it feels over the weekend but it's probably time to see a physio.

I have recently been out twice on short 4km runs, but can feel the injury has not fully healed. It's tendonitis at the outside back of my right knee. I desperately need another form of exercise to replace running. Might even join up at the gym again for a few months. I really miss going out for a run though.

For 2023, I would like to get running again, without this tendonitis. My aim is to run around Derwentwater on my 62nd birthday in July, during our annual holiday in Keswick. If I manage it, it will be the fourth consecutive completion of this run.

Outside back kneed tendonitis - pretty sure that's exactly the same spot I have it.
Noticed it in yoga before running (tight soreness on certain deep lunges but didn't feel it running).
Then it got really painful on a running club evening to the point I had to limp back home.
Around 4 weeks off now and did my first run this morning (as mentioned above) but perhaps returned to early.

Very likely need to see physio now.
Def join a gym if you can.
A good rowing session can sort the cardio out (and it''s a great whole body workout too).

Horrible having your favourite toy taken away...
