My 30th & final Parkrun of the year completed this morning at Peel Park in a very steady 31:25. Was a tad muddy this morning & part of the usual course beside the Irwell was actually under the Irwell. The Canada geese were sorting out the drainage in the lower fields!
As an aside, if you are thinking of making a fitness or diet New Year resolution, DON'T DO IT!
There's a number of reasons for this:
1. Why punish yourself at the most miserable time of the year?
2. There's a reason we eat hearty winter food in winter. Your body needs it! Save the salads for spring & summer. You'll also appreciate an extra couple of pounds to keep you warm when you're sat at a freezing cold railway station waiting for a cancelled train.
3. Don't give up booze in January. The small independent pubs & breweries are on their knees & need your custom. If you want to give up anything, give up going to large chain pubs, especially the one beginning with "W" who's owner looks like a deranged Thundercat. Pubs are also pleasant places to visit now all the once a year drinkers are out of the way.
4. Gyms will be full of once a year gym bunnies, most of who will give up after a couple of weeks when they realise they don't enjoy it or it's too hard work.
5. Starting running in January is not a good idea. There's not much daylight, the cold air will destroy your lungs & you'll probably injure yourself slipping in mud or on ice.
Instead, wait until Spring when you want to spend more time outdoors, you'll be naturally eating less, you'll have more energy, and you will have had time to consider what activity you enjoy.
Happy new year!
