Running thread

I've just been told by my physio I can start impact training again after a lengthy (18 month) layoff for a Posterior Tibial Tendon injury (ankle). Done some light jumping on it today and if there is no reaction tomorrow I can start to very gradually increase dynamic loading.

With any luck I could be back to full running in a few months and once I get back to running good for age 5k times I'm free to start building up the distance again

Passed the 50 mile mark for the month last night, aiming for a hundred this month and a thousand in total over the year hopefully. No events booked yet so no added pressure, will just see how I feel nearer the time of some.
Around 7 years ago I was up to 150-180 miles a month whilst training for a marathon, then I got a hip flexor injury post marathon and I haven't run more than 50 miles a month since then, and zero miles run in the last 18 months. I ended up injuring my Post Tib (partial tear) at the end of a negative-split 5k training run about 200 yds from the finish.

Sounds painful mate.

I’m just taking it nice and steady, only did 300 all of last year and just couldn’t get motivated, just before Xmas I started back and have got the bug again. Did 1000 a few years back when running a few half’s and a full marathon so the training ticked along to get the mileage up but always was due to events, this year just for fun and fitness.

I'm not getting any younger, and injuries are taking an age to heal these days. I've also got a niggling shoulder injury from hitting a pothole on my bike. Luckily I didn't fall off.

The Post Tib is the tendon that runs from the middle of the foot, round the inside of the ankle and up into the calf. For the first couple of weeks after injury I couldn't do anything that involve pushing off on my toes, pain around 7-8 out of 10, then VERY gradually the pain got less. Up until about 4 months ago I was often waking up with a really stiff ankle until a got moving.

My treatment so far has mainly been a gradual increase in static loading and flexibility exercises, but I've also had a few treatments of the full weight of my physio bearing down on the tendon with her thumbs to break down the scar tissue an promote healing. That I cannot recommend - I was close to passing out on more than one occasion.

I've also had some custom orthotics made (had them for about 3 months) and they have really helped as they take a little bit of the load off my tendon. It's looking pretty positive for a return to running, but I need to see if I get any reaction to todays session yet before my physio decides the next course of action...
