Running thread

Thanks to everyone in this thread for all the hints, tips and support throughout the year. You're all an inspiration to an old 61 plodder (me). Merry Christmas
I can only echo that sentiment ob. You and I have proved that it's never too late to start! Merry Christmas to all those who have helped me on my journey with invaluable support on this thread. BM at its best.

I'm 48. I thought I was reasonably fit, I play 5 a side a few times a week. When I started I struggled to run more than 5 mins solid though. For the first few weeks I never thought I would ever be able to run even 30 mins solid, but I just got used to it after about 2 weeks. I go out for a run 3 - 4 mornings a week and I'm nearly 8 weeks in now.
Compared to me, you definitely were! The only running I'd done before July this year was the odd wheezy jog to Ashburys on the final whistle. Regardless, that rate of progress suggests you're a natural!

Nice steady 18 miles this morning, have had that daft sinus/chest infection thing that's doing the rounds for two weeks so happy to get back into the big miles
I've got it right now. Fucking horrible isn't it? I keep kidding myself I'll be right for a run the next day before waking up to realise I'm absolutely full of catarrh again and feeling like death. I was hoping to get out on the local Christmas Parkrun tomorrow but can't shift this hacking cough. To cap it all, I've passed it on to 'er indoors who's just announced that Christmas Day is cancelled as a result. Happy days.
Otherwise, glad you're back pounding the pavements mate.

Gaz. When running 18 miles how do you manage toilet breaks? I’m just about to start my training for the marathon in April and last time I was training I really struggled with this. Just wondering what others do. Thanks.

Toilet breaks are the monkey I've been carrying on my back since April 2022 mate.
Manchester marathon cruising along, 5 miles to go until I finally get sub 3, stopped for a piss, couldn't get back going again, hobbled in at 3hours and 14 seconds.
It's tricky mate, have to experiment a lot with what suits, which gels won't go straight through you, I never really take much more than a sip of the water they give you on the way round, I think it does go off a bit the more used your body gets to the high miles as I'm not as bad as when I first started.

Cheers pal. I've been using a decongestant from Boots which is quite effective. My breathing has been that laboured, I even borrowed my other half's asthma inhaler last night! I couldn't contemplate running right now. Hoping it'll pass over the next few days.

Thanks. Suppose at least there are toilets available during the marathon. I’m more curious about 18 mile training runs on the roads. What do you do then? It was always an issue for me when training last time.

From my own experiences I tend to ensure I always include a toilet stop en-route just to be on the safe side.

Leasing up to races I try to cut back on the cakes/sugar/chocolate etc and generally on race day and when I train I try to eat a minimum of 4 hours before the race and also do a short jog beforehand just to get the body moving.

In preparation for a long run such as a Marathon my long run day will include eating the food/gels I intend to have on race day. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is changing stuff or trying something new. Worth looking on the website, of the race you are doing, to see what gels they are using etc and giving them a go.

So far Ive been ok, but I know when my diet slips, or I do not prepare properly, Im in a whole world if pain. My longest run to date is 67k non-stop and I was absolutely fine by doing the right things.
