Running thread

Oh it's not a pub run but an event over a mile course (in our case a single circuit of a local park divided into four) along which beer is supplied at so-called transition zones. You must finish the beer before exiting each zone and resuming the race.

I made the mistake of telling 'er indoors that we're retiring to a local boozer once the race is done. Then again, I can blame my drunken state on the four I was 'obliged' to down sharpish during the race!
 
I've just accepted an invitation to a Beer Mile to be run this Saturday. For the uninitiated, it's an event governed by strict rules that require competitors to down four bottles of minimum 5% strength beer at regular points over a mile course (with an additional lap penalty to be run by those who spew en route). Believe it or not, the current world record is sub 4:30! Do any of you fellas have personal experience of such an event and, if so, can you offer any hints or tips. I'm beginning to think I've made a serious error of judgement!

I'm sure you were all desperate, ahem, to know how I got on later today. Sadly, a severe chest infection, undoubtedly picked up in Belgrade the other week, has kiboshed any chance of my participation.
Suffice to say, I'm fucking gutted. Not least of all because the missus is now on my case for potentially infecting her with the dreaded lurgy. Christ, some women know how to kick a man when he's down!
 
I did my second Parkrun in 22:17 this morning, which was exactly 50 seconds faster than my first one, two weeks ago.

I ran my first ever 10k yesterday also, which I enjoyed. I'm looking at entering a 10k, at the end of Jan, to have a target to work towards.

It's only seven and a half weeks since I started running, so happy with my progress so far.

That's frighteningly quick for a newbie! Great effort fella. I must confess to some envy! Out of curiosity, can I ask your age and level of fitness when you decided to run seriously?

I'm 48. I thought I was reasonably fit, I play 5 a side a few times a week. When I started I struggled to run more than 5 mins solid though. For the first few weeks I never thought I would ever be able to run even 30 mins solid, but I just got used to it after about 2 weeks. I go out for a run 3 - 4 mornings a week and I'm nearly 8 weeks in now.
