Running thread

I'm starting this year 10kg lighter than I was last Jan, and in a much better place fitness wise.

I've been offered a Manchester marathon place for April, so need to decide ASAP if I want to do it. Not done a marathon yet, but feel I could give it a decent go.

Going to sign up for the Tour of Tameside in June, and if I can get a place, there is a Disney HM on in October when i'm there on holiday so fancy doing that.
That's amazing mate. How the hell have you lost 10kg!? Please share your secret! I actually need to lose that amount. Was it just a question of dedication?

Sounds like you're in good shape and it's the right time to go for the marathon. Especially if you've got decent fitness right now.

Been in awful place in last 6 weeks or so. Managed to get out yesterday for 2.4 miles at lunchtime. In last 6 weeks moved father in law into a care home, cleared out his flat ready to be put up for sale. In between that (2nd Jan) his wife passed away (was expected) in the same care home he's gone into. Been helping organise funeral whilst being there for him and my other half. Yesterday's short run in pouring rain was so much for me mentally than physically
Look after yourself mate. Life can throw some right shit at you at times. Sorry to hear about all of this. I can't really offer any words of wisdom as nothing other than time will help with these matters. Things will settle though. All I would suggest is to not put any unnecessary pressure on yourself. It's great if you can get out for a run if you can but at the same time, it can wait.

Yeah, just a few months of not being a greedy twat combined with a decent amount of running/walking seemed to do the trick. Apart from the first 3 months of actively trying to lose weight, I didnt really restrict myself to be honest. I could probably lose another 10kg if I really tried, but not sure I can be that dedicated!

I have now taken that marathon place, so better get cracking with the training!

@Gaz76 Glad to hear you are alright.Did wonder when id not seen your daily 5 am run on my Strava feed. You still getting down to Alex for parkrun ?

Thanks mate, not even done parkrun, just needed a break from it all tbh, it was becoming a chore, I've been going for a 3mile walk at dinner time and that's making me want to get back going with the running, walking takes far too long!!!
Have an entry for the Manchester mara again this year so will get going soon to train for that and then Sydney mara is 1st of September so hopefully this rest will do the trick and I will be back firing for that

Ace. You'll love it and it'll be a great motivator.

Parkrun number 24 at Morden south London today. Only 3rd run in about 6 weeks. Official time of 35.24. It was horrendous, horrific, tremendous and terrific in equal measures

Just wondering if you lads listen to music when you're out running, and if so, what are your top choices?

I've compiled my top 10 tracks in this video. Quite a bit of Manc music, but then, I'm biased!

Number 25 for me today at Roundshaw downs. Loads around me cancelled due to state of courses after days of heavy rain. At times this was running in treacle, slipping, sliding and paddling through puddles but got it done. Official time of 36.09. Bit gutted as thought I'd gone in under 36

Interesting that. I’ve had to give that up because the level of ambient/external noise can often be that high I either can’t hear what’s on the headphones properly, or have to have them dangerously loud.
If all my running was on remote fields it might be ok, but even then on a windy day it can be noisy.

On another note, not been able to run this year yet due to getting a sore heel after a Parkrun in December. I was over straining, striding at times, desperate to get a PB before the end of the year (which I got). There were also some places where the tarmac had been bent slightly by tree roots, but I’ve done tons of parkruns and never had that injury ever.
Any recommendations?
Cant seem to shake it off, and a bit difficult to rest a heel!

Many years ago I used to race cyclocross, I loved the muddy courses, the muddier the better. Managed 29:16 at Marple Parkrun this morning, pleased with that as much better than last week.

Thanks. Yeah, it's quiet country lanes here so not much traffic. On the other hand, there are no pavements or streetlights so that could make it unsafe.

To be honest, I couldn't do my runs without music and podcasts (full volume) so I just do it but try to be extra careful and vigilant about what's around me.

Good shout. Tbh I much prefer having music or podcasts on if I can, so agree with you fully ideally. It’s just that it’s often too noisy.

When I can, either mid tempo dance mixes, normally stiff off the Mixcloud app - loads to choose from on there - which I can zone in and out of, or one of the footy or cycling discussion podcasts. I do know people who only listen to directly relevant stuff, like the Parkrun ones.

Yeah, fair enough but I listen to stuff to zone OUT of my runs!
