Russian invasion of Ukraine

Sounds like tanks and armoured vehicles are on the way to Ukraine. I don't see why we can't give them the MIG fighter planes. What's the difference? The Russians are on the back foot, now is the time to press home surely. Why not give them some anti ship missiles to go with the planes and take out a couple of Russian Navy ships in the Black Sea. No point in pussyfooting arround with Putin.
Agree on the Navy ships - you need to humiliate Putin. Make it very clear he has lost. This war only ends when his regime ends and for that he needs to be humiliated.

It will be a variety of causes, but a lack of active protection on their tanks is allowing anti tank missiles to have a field day. Their lack of air superiority is down to the vulnerability of their aircraft- wrong weapons for the terrain perhaps.

Drones are proving effective- I think the west will be working hard to create counter measures.
We already have them.
Jamming, targeted jamming, anti drone drones, operator location identitification and soon high powerd lasers.
A few tricks were used when drones started buzzing airports in the UK in 2017-18.

Bollocks. I'll give you some more realistic numbers:

£30bn is the figure for the whole EU, not only Germany! EU.
EU sends about €1bn per day to Russia.

Germany sent €4bn for russian imports in January 2022,
€3bn alone for energy imports. 1 month.

Germany is ready to stop russian coal imports within weeks.
Germany is reducing russian oil imports within months,
but needs up to 2 years to substitute russian gas, for missing infrastructure. We'll speed up building new LNG terminals.

Another interesting detail:
in 2021 EU has payd
USD 64bn for russian gas and
USD 180bn for russian oil!

Oil has a much higher profit margin than gas,
but it's much easier to shift oil imports to other suppliers.
Stopping russian oil imports asap hits Russia hard.
@St.Pauli support your 2nd figure is wrong. It was announced yesterday that the e.u. has spent 30 billion on fuel from Russia but only sent I billion since the start of the latest invasion. It us not 1 billion a day.
The bit about stopping coal is just a joke. 'Within weeks' !! How are you suddenly going to do that ?
The UK has cut its use of coal for power to 2% of total. It has taken years to do this and it was done re carbon emissions.

I really don't understand why Macron keeps talking to Putin. It's a waste of time.
I think it's important that Macron is talking to Putin, we need to leave open the door to negotiation and give him a way out. Let's be honest the chance of him stepping aside or being deposed is slight, so the west will have to deal with him at some point.

Widely reported:
The EU has paid €35 billion for Russian energy since the start of the war compared to the €1 billion it has sent to Ukraine in the form of foreign aid, Josep Borrell, the EU's top diplomat, has said.

So about 1Bn euros a day.
