Photo op?
This is a show of support, to been seen round the world. This is to show Putin/Russia (and his allies) that the Ukraine is not alone.
What has Boris to gain?
He is being replaced, so it's not an effort to keep himself in the job.
He is also putting himself in real danger.

I personally think the guy is a buffoon, but cannot fault him how he has supported the Ukraine.

It is perfectly possible to both believe Boris Johnson
(1) encouraged Putin by enabling Brexit and courting various oligarchs.
(2) has done the right thing supporting Ukraine and is welcomed there by Zelensky

Boris has been an absolute shambles of a PM on every other metric/subject, especially COVID.

However, you can't knock what he's done for Ukraine - even if it's just being the figurehead and appearing in the right place at the right time to show solidarity with Ukraine.
