but I do personally credit his performance in the US senate over Iraq oil sales - in fact, that was one of the most impressive political performances I've come across

He's very impressive performer for sure.

However, invariably wrong.

He's just a narcissist, enjoys the attention and likes the sound of his own voice.

Bit like a left wing Boris Johnson, but more extreme. IIRC his private life is also reminiscent of Johnson's.

True - though they are a NATO member and Erdogan is an astute enough politician to know which way his bread is buttered. Turkey enjoys the defence of the West against threats from the Middle East and further afield, plus Turkey enjoys billions of pounds from trade and tourism from the West.

He's not going to pick sides with a bunch of medieval terrorists over that. He needs to toe a careful line in not pushing out the kind of overtly pro-Western messaging to make his country a massive terrorist target in the way Israel is, while also playing nice with the West, as that's where the money and security is.

He's not without his faults by a long stretch, but being the leader of a country like Turkey must be one of the hardest jobs on the planet.
