Russian invasion of Ukraine

German consulate in Kyiv hit by Russian missile strike

The building housing the German consulate in Kyiv was hit by a Russian missile strike, according to a German foreign ministry spokesperson.
Let's hope Germany finally gets off the fucking fence as a result then. Nord Stream pipeline explosions, Rail infrastructure sabotage yesterday and now this.

Oops. That's a strike on NATO territory. Let's see the size of the fight in the dog.

Key thing now will be whether this morning's attacks are the start of a persistent campaign against the Ukrainian civilians or a one-off retaliation for the attack on the bridge. If it is the former, and it goes on unabated, then it could be the start of a Russian attempt to create another wave of migration west into Europe, after which Russia will turn off the energy taps and try to create division in Europe in an attempt to undermine its support.
The start ? Remember mariupol ? He has been targeting civilians from the start

Hard to forget. Rather than just jumping on one word in isolation, however, perhaps accept the word in the context "the start of a persistent campaign against the Ukrainian civilians," and that in itself is in the context of today's large-scale attacks on cities. Kiev was attacked in the early months but has been largely free from such attacks in recent months, which is why some people had even returned, and the missiles today have been landing indiscriminately in city centres at the busiest times.

The sanctions that were imposed now should have been imposed back then. Blowing a civilian airliner out of the sky on top of annexing Crimea should have left them isolated, too much Russian money and cheap gas flowing into Western economies at the time.
Easier said than done. Too many people in too many countries were prepared to give the Russians the benefit of the doubt even though there was overwhelming evidence that Russia were to blame for the airliner and for the biological warfare attack in Salisbury. It’s taken an unprovoked invasion to get a consensus from western countries and even now some are only half heartedly supporting sanctions and looking for ways round them. Get this level of consensus in 2014 would have been impossible.

Very true, using chemical weapons on British sovereign soil went completely unanswered. The repeated sitting on hands by governments has led us to where we are now in a dangerous situation where it could escalate further.
