Russian invasion of Ukraine

This is exactly why you’d never be in charge though. You’re describing events which are a direct war between NATO and Russia. This is World War 3.

Fortunately it seems like the missiles weren’t fired by Russia, but I don’t understand your logic.

If Russia fired missiles into NATO territory and killed people, that is a provocative act of war. If NATO didn’t respond to such aggression what purpose would it serve?

NATO doesn’t have a mandate to “prevent WW3 at any cost”. So reacting to an attack by securing a buffer (attacking missile systems in range of NATO countries borders) is a perfectly reasonable escalation.

We are already at War with Russia by proxy.

Russia's reaction to this incident, vigourously maintaining that they did not fire the missile at Poland, shows just how terrified the Russians are of a NATO response.

Their typical ballsy "we'll do what we want" attitude is absent whenever NATO becomes involved. Less "IF we wanted to... we could" (as seen in their dealings with Ukraine) and more "Oh please God no! We swear it wasn't us!"

Der Spiegel has unearthed the truth, finding a couple of emails.
Soriano: We need a distraction from this PL investigation. Any ideas?
Pearce: I have a mate in Moscow who has some spare missiles.
Soriano: Where did he get them from?
Pearce: Mansour sent them when we were plotting a coup against Theresa May.
Soriano: Can we use them now?
Pearce: Leave it to me. We‘ll aim them at Gornik FC, but we will hit Anfield by mistake.
Soriano: Can you take out RAWK while you’re at it.
Pearce: Will do. The missiles will be marked “A present from Chelsea.” Meanwhile, here’s £100m from Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund disguised as sponsorship from a dodgy betting firm. You can buy a midfielder from Dortmund with that. We’ve bribed their DOF to get it through.
Soriano: Cheers mate.

Their army is stuck in the mud in Ukraine going no where with fewer and fewer equipment and munitions by the day. A conventional war with NATO would completely lay waste to the rest of their military machine with minimal effort, they really don’t want to pull on the tail of the West as it would be a disaster for them. The only insurance policy they have is their nukes.

You can sort of see why it might annoy you a bit if your enemy (NATO) suddenly pitches up as your next door neighbour. I get the annoyance but rather than move with the times and actually become part of the new world, they chose to take a route that is 80 years old and decided on extreme violence instead. I understand why Russia is the way it is to a degree after the world wars but they have chosen completely the wrong path here and what they are getting now is their own fault for allowing one man to have so much power for so long. Unfortunately China are following a similar path and that is a big concern to the military here particularly.

But then invading a country with the clear intention of taking over meaning Russia automatically borders 2 additional NATO countries, rather than a 1 'speculative' member

the whole NATO argument Makes absolutely zero sense.

Plus, If wiki is accurate, before Russia Annexed Crimea there was very little public interest in Ukraine ever joining NATO.

It probably was an attempt to shoot down an in coming missile..
The question is what was the trajectory of that incoming missile
Or was the missile mistakenly identified?
It all muddies the waters which plays perfectly into Putin's narrative for domestic consumption.
Now it's time to give Ukraine everything it needs to finish the job

If you are a book person this is well worth a read. Written a few years ago but could have been written in 2022. View attachment 61056
Read it earlier this year - a real eye-opener on modern Russia and helps with understanding what is going on at the moment. And of course makes a good case for why Putin and his cronies need to be removed.
