Russian invasion of Ukraine

Was reading the other day our Challenger 2s are out performing the America Abrams for gun accuracy and crew survivability , if only successive short signed UK governments hadn't let our manufacturing capabilities go could have been a game changer in sufficient numbers. :-(

Sadly (IMHO) challenger 3 will not, I understand, have the rifle barrel likely resulting in declining accuracy but better cross compatibility with other NATO tanks.

Challenger 2 was an amazing bit of kit at the time, a huge upgrade on Ch 1, and although 3 is an upgraded version of 2, I expect that the new version will be a much needed upgrade as technology and armour requirements have moved on.

Of course they haven’t.

What a state of affairs that a US President can parrot a lie, one that has zero evidence to support it being anything else, and it barely raises a murmur. The fact Trump boasted he’d been told about this putative attack by ‘President Putin’ and not been pulled up on it shows what a sorry state US democracy is in right now.

Does Trump even believe it himself? Possibly not, which actually makes it marginally worse.
To be fair to the Orange Gibbon he did call out Putin's lie by posting a link to a New York Post article.
Not that he stated it loudly of course...

Yep unfortunately we're going over to NATO 120mm smooth bore main gun, the Challenger 3 is having a new turret to accommodate it and upgraded armour etc. Still basically a 2 as we're just using originally hulls instead of building a completely new tank, numbers will be limited.

The **** ostensibly blows with the wind, but he is ultimately beholden to his master in the Kremlin.

Some shells are fine guided and can course correct before hitting the target with a SABOT payload - so not too big a loss.

The big loss for UK tank crews is the spining squash head round (UK HESH, US HEP) for demolishing structures and disposing of more lightly armoured targets and Russian turrent stored amo. The spinning HESH is slightly more effective and accurate over longer range than a non spinning one.

So does that mean challenger 2 in service can be upgraded?

I believe that's what's happening basically it's a life extension of the Challenger 2 upgraded armour and fire control systems plus full refurbishment, trouble I think we only have about 300 and not all of them are down for the upgrades so numbers will be limited. Think we have some spare hulls kicking about as well no idea how many.

148 are proposed to be produced - ie take existing Challenger 2’s remaining in BA service - 219 from original 386+22 driver training versions.

Seems quite a high (non conflict) attrition rate 386 -> 219 (even with the 14 sent to Ukraine)

Oman also had 38 delivered.

It naturally slips off everybody’s radar, but it absolutely needs saying from time to time, what the Ukrainian people have done to repel the thieves and rapists is truly incredible. It will be talked about in military circles until we eventually obliterate ourselves.

Defending their homeland because they don’t want to be subservient to and neutered by Russia.

On what planet is that an unreasonable aspiration?

3 days time and Russia will have been fighting as long as in WW2(if you discount the time they spent assisting the Germans) and where has it got them, they may as well not bothered.

Read the other day that they've lost more men in this conflict than all the others they've been in since ww2 put together and they've gained less kilometers than Britain did at the somme.
