For 3 hours now a special plane has been flying concentric circles south of Moscow. It's special because it is an airborne Command and Control Centre for the russian president - RSD039.



This article describes it's functions (ignore the first picture).

According to Flightradar24, it doesn't fly that often (obviously it may not declare a callsign all the time), before last Thursday it hadn't been airbourne since October, since then it's flown last Thursday, then a couple of times to minsk (belarus), and now it's clearly doing some sort of surveillance.

It’s still up there, I would imagine an airborne command centre like that would need to be able to fly for long periods of time in the event of a nuclear war. Wonder if it they are doing drills for this, the near perfect circles it’s flying are pretty impressive.
