Russian invasion of Ukraine

Give. Them. The. Tanks. They. Need. NATO!
Listening to a military expert on Radio 4 this morning. He reasoned that most of the heavier tanks would currently be ineffective in Ukraine - he named the Challenger as one. Not just the muddy conditions but also the challenges in the Ukrainians continually supplying the tanks with fuel and ammo.
He said for the foreseeable in Ukraine until the spring, tanks would probably serve best purpose by being pretty static artillery points.

Good job we're sending 30 155mm self propelled guns as well.

"Free the Leopards" slogan.

What’s Germany’s problem (and France) on supplying arms to Ukraine?

The Ukrainians are fighting a war on behalf of the US and NATO to weaken Russia (not invade it) and reduce the capability of its plan to integrate countries back into into the former bloc.

Without support, Ukraine would have fallen very early on, a puppet administration installed and then it would have just been a matter of time before Putin pressured the next country.

Personally I think Germany and France are very focused on the after war landscape and looking to best place themselves to take advantage of it.

You're not wrong.

Exactly this, modern tanks are very dependent on highly trained specialists to keep them running, going to take 6 months to get everything ready n place to supply them etc

Independent Belarussion source reckons Belarus will join Russua attacking Ukraine in February.

It will take until the spring to get people trained to use them.

I honestly think this will open the flood gates. Lots of nato countries have said they wont go it alone but will if others do. This opens Poland,Germany and France at the very least.

This will probably only hit 40/50 tanks in the 1st wave but it’s started and will snowball

The biggest thing is it represents a massive shift from giving Ukraine equipment from surplus or mothballed caches into giving current inventory.
