Russian invasion of Ukraine

.

1st wave of them. More will be sent.

Ukrainian forces need to be trained to use them.

Same reason HIMARS were a slow roll out.

Plus in the grand scheme of things. In modern warfare, tanks are pretty useless. When you look at the last few US wars for example, it’s all air superiority. If a force has it then no matter how good the tanks are, they go boom. So numbers are a lot smaller than they used to be as they are only a small part of modern warfare. Back in WW2 they were a massive part of warfare.
This isn’t quite modern warfare though the way the Russians are using their men it’s like WW2. The tanks will obliterate them as the Ukrainians don’t have a huge airforce it’s going to be won by boots in the ground and the tanks will do a hell of a lot of damage.

Nope this isn’t modern in those ways, but I was addressing why tanks are far less in numbers now, there just are not as many around to give.

Edit that being said, US has 6k of them.

Oh ye they moved away from the Cold War after 91 Gulf war, as the threat was seen as coming from smaller scale battles and them been more mobile for warfare, it almost seems pointless having the amount we have as they wouldn’t last long against a larger force anyway, say the Chinese.

Sorry if this has already been asked, but can someone enlighten me....? So Poland are sending 14 tanks to Ukraine, and we have promised 12..... what is the use of that?

In WWII at the battle of Kursk Germany attacked Russia with 2,700 tanks and motorised guns and were defeated by a force even larger. The biggest tank battle in history: approx 6000 in total.

How come 80 years later we expect such small numbers to make any impact on this current war. Yes, I know these tanks will be considerably more powerful with all sorts of modern technology, but why so few?

Even if - as I have heard - they are significantly better than the Russian tanks in use in 2022/23, surely the numbers will be an issue. Again in WWII the Sherman tank was inferior to the German tanks, but just by dint of the numbers built and the numbers put into the conflict, the allies won in the end.

Will just 26 modern tanks really make a difference? or is it just a political issue to say help is being given, even if it won't really help in the long run.
I think the reasoning is that in WW2 the Russians were defending their own country from a hostile invader with a psychopathic despotic dictator as it's leader whereas the current incursion into Ukraine is by a conscript army which is wondering what the hell they are doing there, whereas the Ukranians know that, for them, it is fight or die.

I know what you mean, but I find the whole thing quite bonkers (and sad). Recently I have read about how the Russians are 'going over the top' and dying in numbers like in 1914-1918 and also 1941-1945 and it saddens me - even though they started it. At least back 100 years life was pretty sh1t and you would probably not get much past 65 anyway. Now we have the internet, Xbox and long lives, yet still people fight and die before they get old. I really hoped things had moved on, certainly in so-called western civilizations. What is going on...?

Xbox? Hardly a reason to want to live longer!

I just picked that as one example, the point I am making is to be alive in 2023, especially as a young person (depite all the issues about climate change and stuff) is to be so lucky, compared with pretty much any period in the past.

I have seen so many films (and read books) about those kids - on both sides - lying about their age to go into battle in WWI ("All Quiet on the Western Front" on Netflix is excellent) but seriously, if a WWI situation happened now, how many British lads 16/17/18 would be rushing to join up? Not so many as in 1914 I bet because life in 1914 was boring as fcuk (and bloody hard), especially for the working class. That is the point I am trying to make.

I don't know what is going on with the Russian army - is it a case of get out there and fight or we shoot you (as in 'Enemy at the Gates') or what, because I can't understand why they are doing it.... a mutiny might be the swiftest way out of this whole bloody mess and the Russians - in 1917 - have previous for that.

Human nature, that’s what.

I’ve been in Bali for the last month & the place is flooded with Russians, according to the locals they all started arriving around Covid. A lot of intimidating gangsters but many just finding a place to be outside of Russia. On the whole they aren’t liked, very aggressive & taking advantage of corrupt police.

Apparently it’s the same in many places around the world. It made me think if Russia is conscripting are these on the run? Is there freedom of movement for Russians?
