Russian invasion of Ukraine

Yeah on an Iraqi tank with a depleted Uranium round. Im sure I’ve seen it reported somewhere that the T72 doesn’t have a firing range of what the Abrams, Challenger and Leopard has, if you can engage the enemy from a longer distance before they can hit you that surely gives you a strategic advantage straight away. Russia are now onto the older models of tanks which will be even worse for fire power.
Daytime they have similar range but the sights on the Russian tanks are no where near as good and hence much lower accuracy. That coupled with no advanced fire control system puts the T72, T80 and probably the T90A at a serious disadvantage. T90M might be a different matter.

Nighttime however it’s chalk and cheese. The upgraded T72 thermal sight (if fitted) can see around 2km, the original system being limited to around 300m. The Challenger 2 (Thales) thermal sight which dates back nearly 20yrs can resolve targets up to 10km away.

They will be vulnerable to some degree, The Abrams and Challenger has some specialist armour on it to combat that, whether Ukraine gets it on their Abrams remains to be seen as it’s top secret and I would imagine the Yanks don’t want that going into Russian hands so it can be copied.

Tank on tank though, the firing range of NATO main battle tanks is a lot further than what any T-72 can do which means they can engage a lot further away.
They will have explosive reactive armour, as well as whatever material has replaced the chobham armour (can’t remember).
They will also be less vulnerable to whatever handheld rocketery the Russians have - not ‘intelligent’ to explode above the turrets (weak spots) as seen on many vids.

One thing that’s not been seen so far in this recent war, is the advance of Ukrainian forces against an in depth prepared defence - mines, targeted artillery points etc.
I would fear for the advancement of Ukrainian tanks against Russian mines, except with recent past experience of Russian ability, it may be crapily applied and useless. We shall see as the spring thaw gives way to hardened ground and the (hopefully) inevitable Ukrainian push towards the Black Sea coast occurs.

Any idea what the accuracy is of a NATO tank at max range?

In the 1st Gulf war, Challenger 1 tanks set records:

Destroyed a T-55 tank at a range of 3.6km (2.25 miles)

destroyed a tanker at a range of 4.7km (2.9 miles)

followed by destroying another Iraqi tank at a range of 5.1km (3.2 miles)

The Challenger used to perform badly in the Canadian Army Trophy before we sacked the competition off. It's predecessors, Centurion and Chieftain used to do well!
