Hah - I remember doing exactly that to a GPMG on the ranges in Brecon back in the day...
I do know that I definitely wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of it.
Would the gun be a write off from that point on? or just need to let it cool down?Hah - I remember doing exactly that to a GPMG on the ranges in Brecon back in the day...

Just the barrel - you have a couple of them and are supposed to swap on a regular basis (it only takes a few seconds to do so, they're designed to be swapped on the go) to prevent what is shown in the photo happening!Would the gun be a write off from that point on? or just need to let it cool down?

Its inevitable that they are going to lose some of them attacking dug in positions through minefields. They have got through the first line of defence but its a relatively small area and that area will effectively become a kill zone for any artillery the Russians have that can hit it. Once the breakthrough starts to expand the pocket they have created, the russian forces will find it much more difficult to maintain artillery cover1st Challenger tank lost.
