Russian invasion of Ukraine

The problems are here and now. The Kremlin just announced that “The countries economic reality has considerably changed” and that Sberbank has run out of money after a run on the bank.

The stock exchange is STILL closed today, the rouble is at the lowest it’s ever been.

These economic sanctions are not short term issues, they are hitting right now.
Putin is more interested in his personal fortune that will be bullet proof.

My neighbours are Latvian and we spent 40 minutes yesterday having a similar conversation. They believe we in the west are being fed propaganda, there’s a different side to the story, Putin is acting in the interest of Ukraine. It does make you wonder how they can come to that conclusion?
To be honest we are being fed some propoganda about some things. Both sides tell the story how they want it to be heard.

No one knows for sure what has gone on in the disputed regions in the years before this so it’s difficult to have a full understanding of the situation.

There just needs to be a potential solution whatever that may be. My view is that Putin is mad enough to start a Nuclear war if he is pushed and threatened. Not by sanctions but by NATO forces. He would see a few years in a well stocked shelter as the price to pay.

Based on that it’s a risk the west can’t take. Diplomacy and solutions needs to be the order of the day. The 1973 Israel/Arab war had the potential to become Nuclear as did other conflicts and every time, a solution was found. People at the top need to be rational and calm in times like this not suggesting uk citizens take up arms and fight for Ukraine like Truss did the other day.

There always needs to be an out and also needs to be a reintegration of a country into the world economy. Look how well Japan and Germany have done economically since the end of WW2 when they were both on their arses. Humans can only take so much suffering and Russia has a population of 144 million of them.

The end result is unknown but I’ll bet there are hundreds of conversations between diplomats every day and as long as they keep talking then there is always the chance of a solution and that’s what everyone needs to hope for.

He talks but says nothing. Avoids answering any specific questions. The prime minister standards have slipped greatly over time.

Our Parliamentary system has been bypassed by the simple fact the person who asks a question of the government doesn’t get to say “That was an interesting 3 minutes of waffle but that’s nothing to do with the question I asked which you haven’t answered”

If you just speak long enough there’s no accountability.

How can we, and the rest of Europe sanction Russia, but still buy their oil and gas.
This should not happen!
The very first thing that should have been sanctioned is the oil and gas.
I know that most of Europe depends on a certain % of the fuel coming out of Russia, but at times like these we need to stand together, to stand up as one, and pull out of anymore purchases of fuel, from Putin.
It will be a struggle, It’ll land some countries in fuel poverty, but unless this action is taken Russia will keep destroying the Ukrain.

Europe are now starting to come out of the winter, our reliance on these fuels will decrease over the next few weeks, and months as the days draw out and temperatures rise.
Our government’s, need to find a short term solution, and put into place a long term plan that negates the need for future procurement of any fuels from Russia.

How can it be, that so many NATO countries, are reliant on Russia producing the fuels they need for their economies and population to function on a daily basis?
Merkel shat her knickers after the Japanese nuclear meltdown and drove German dependency on Russian gas through the roof.

Anyone else as infuriated as me that the Olympic committee has approved that the Russian and Belarus Paralympic teams are allowed to take part?

WE MUST ALL BE TOUGHER AND TOTALLY EXCLUDE EVERYTHING RUSSIAN (AND BELLARUSSIAN) FROM EVERY WORLD COMMUNITY EVENT!!
Should we call on all other participants to boycott the event?

Which do see as the best outcome - Russia controlling Ukraine, or the majority of the world destroyed in a nuclear war?

Enforcement of a no-fly zone would likely involve NATO shooting down Russian aircraft, and striking Russian air defence units. Putin has already effectively said he is willing to resort to nuclear weapons if there is any such interference.
It is clear which way Putin leans in answering the question in your first para. He said "What is the point of a world without Russia in it?" I assume he meant "greater Russia". If he can't achieve that, he seems to favour nuclear holocaust.
