Russian invasion of Ukraine

Putin has been brooding on this since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

He feels it’s his destiny to invade Ukraine and will probably be prepared to die in the process. He has no consideration for anyone.

There’s no negotiation with him at all

Ukraine claims it has foiled an assassination attempt against the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Officials said a unit of Chechen special forces - known as Kadyrovites - were involved in the scheme and had been "eliminated".

Ukrainian security chief Oleksiy Danilo said: "We are well aware of the special operation that was to take place directly by the Kadyrovites to eliminate our president."

Mr Danilo said Ukraine had been tipped off about the plot by members of Russia's Federal Security Service

This is exactly what I've been saying about having people inside the Russian government. Its exactly why this won't escalate into WW3. Too much money involved for anything like that to happen. My money is on old Vlad being turned in sooner rather than later, or his exact location found out and Russian Special Forces grab the ****.

Top many high ranking Russians with family across the world for anything world ending to happen.

Yeah, look at the west, afraid of WW3 and a nuclear exchange. How pathetic of countries not to rush to start one.

Wouldn't help Ukraine any, btw.
Of course. It's not in our interest to help ukraine.nobody wants WW3 so he can have it.

Owen Jones in the Guardian is telling us how we really can end this. An anti war movement should do the trick. Isn’t Stop The War one of them?

Owen Jones's article is a mess. No proper argument at all.

European media outlets in reporting European news more closely shocker.

Does the media in countries in the Middle East report European issues more than Middle Eastern?

With all due to respect to decent Iraqis, Syrians and others in the region… war in the Middle East has been frequent as the wind for centuries, due to despots and religious fanatics. There’s always been war and fighting in that region.

A sovereign European country, that borders NATO and the EU being invaded is always going to be bigger news in the West, than other parts of the world.

I also think the first Gulf War was probably just as big news, when Saddam invaded Kuwait. Even before we went in it hogged the news on a 24/7 basis.

I don't think it's anything to do with race or one group of people being less worthy than others.

The obvious difference, to me, is that Ukraine and Eastern Europe has been relatively settled for the last 30 years. They've had their issues but outside of the Balkans confilct, lots of former Warsaw Pact countries have been peaceful and are now subject to carnage on a previously imaginable scale. It's closer to home, you could hop on a Ryanair flight and be there in a few hours etc.

The Middle-East has been a war zone for decades and, rightly or wrongly, conflict in these areas has become normalised. Maybe that's the wrong word, let's say expected - we expect it when we turn on our TV. We don't expect it in Ukraine.
