I enjoyed this discussion on Russia, Ukraine and Central Asia with three old school academics.

They touched on the US media’s obsession with the front line in Ukraine while ignoring the steady erosion of Russia’s logistics and infrastructure, Russian Z bloggers who are openly critical of the war effort (I occasionally dip into Rosenberg’s review of Russian newspapers and found them to be surprisingly candid on the state of the economy), the difficulties Putin will have in transitioning from a war economy to a peace economy without substantial investment and the fact they have exhausted their rainy day reserves.

First thirty minutes is on the war.

It's weird. Russias invasion failed because of the embarrassing state of its military. Years of corruption and neglect meant the hardware just wasn't up to the job. On top of that the leadership is incredibly poor. The tactics are basic and don't change when things go bad. Another symptom of a rotten regime where loyalty to putin and corruption are what gets people to the better jobs.

Trump has been fed a load of kremlin talking points. The excuses Putin's allies use to pin the blame on some unlucky character and absolve everyone else of blame.

A lot of those tanks were ambushed with RPGs on the road and when they did actually try going off road the time of year completely bogged them down. Monumental fuck up after fuck up, after they snidely used the entire worlds attention being stuck on coronavirus to build up troops on the border.
 

The statement declared that "international borders should not be changed by force", "the people of Ukraine must have the freedom to decide their own future", and "the path to peace in Ukraine cannot be determined without Ukraine". It also emphasized that meaningful negotiations can only take place under the condition of a ceasefire or a reduction in hostilities
