Ryan Bertrand

Why the fuck are people so obsessed with signing so called "world class players".It fucking doesn`t happen in the real world. For those of you who are infatuated with world class players,go and fucking play on FIFA.
Because we strive for the best, to compete and win all titles. If you want to stay average this is your problem

It's impossible when you have the hg quota. We will always have to go for half decent English players until the academy is able to help us out. We cannot afford to give young players time so they have to be exceptional and we have to have our quota of English players. Sorry not explained that well.
Edit : I am not suggesting Bertrand is only half decent or that I would be unhappy with him , quite the opposite.

He played and won in a Champions League final, and has performed consistently in the PL for a few seasons. I would be very happy to sign him as a first choice left back never mind as back up if we get Mendy!

People need to remember that all clubs have to have "half decent players" irrespective of whether they are English or not.
Look at Kompany,Zabs,Merlin,Sergio. When we signed them they were very good players,in fact you could say Zaba was only average. However we have turned every one of those into either near world class or world class and I`ve not even included Yaya.
I agree with you but people can`t understand the fact that we have to sign non world class players and then its up to that club to make them better.
And breath gently. ;)

Bertrand is a good player and would be a good signing, but we do need to bring in another left-back in as well.

Real Madrid? Barcelona? Munich? By the way I have never said something about 11 wc players, but after Clichy and Kolarov we deserve a quality LB. Bertrand is nice but after talking about Sandro and Mendy how can you not be disappointed if we sign Bertrand as a first choice LB?

To be honest I can't say I have seen any of them enough to be knowledgeable about them. I have to trust in the people the club pay handsomely to make these decisions. It must be difficult to marry up cost, expectations, the quota, and balance of the team too. Hope whoever we get is right.

No, most world class players are bought before they become world class, and develop into world class players later, as we hope will happen with Sane, Sterling and Jesus. But my point is that Bertrand is as good as he's ever likely to get, and while he could definitely do a job for us, he's probably not going to be someone that transforms how we play or offers a huge upgrade on what we had last season.

I think you may be pleasantly surprised by Bertrand, assuming we buy him.

Maybe, but I'm also not too crazy about the prospect of having another 30 year old fullback in 2 years time. Any word on the suggested price? Because unless he's in the final year of his contract, I can't imagine he's going to be particularly cheap being English.

To be fair mate, we aren't signing Bertrand as a first choice LB. He's being targeted as a backup to Mendy who is still very much in play. That's a fact.

But ultimately the transfer window works as you describe every year. Last year we were linked heavily to Kroos, Aubameyang, Suarez and Pogba. We ended up getting Sane and Jesus and plenty on here flapped about our lack of ambition in not making a statement signing etc.

At some level though, we need to trust in what Pep is building. He's got a blank cheque in the transfer market and isn't going to intentionally sell himself short when there's so much riding on the season to come.

In the end, it isn't @oakiecokie that wants to sign Bertrand, it's Guardiola. I'm pretty sure staying "average" isn't part of his game plan.

So would David Silva not get into that team ?

Silva is indisputably world-class and whether he'd get into Madrid's team is up for speculation but not sure how that's at all relevant.

Bertrand would be a good buy as rotation and for cup games, but as our first-choice left back would be disappointing. Not a huge upgrade on Clichy. Mendy is worth spending the extra 5m for
