Yeah, I know. Thing is, he had no idea what he said was crass stupidity and that pretty much is at the heart of the problem.

Copper aside, this guy was a sex offender who used devious means to snare his victim(s). Why it is predominantly men who display this kind of predatory behaviour I do not know. Perhaps any of our resident phycologists may be able to answer that one? The abuse of his position of authority no doubt played a part in his sentencing, but the crime was more than enough without that to result in the harshest of penalties.

This guy was not only predatory, but he chose to act upon it in a way that ended up causing the violent death of a woman. Thankfully this isn't always the outcome of predatory behaviour, but it nonetheless abhorrent even when it doesn't result in physical violence. Some guys turn in to drooling sex pests when they've had a skin full, but they are usually too pissed to do anything, and more likely than not regret it the following day. That in no way excuses it, and those kind of people should be dealt with by the law if their actions result in physical, verbal or mental abuse of others.

I'm not one for going out much personally, and being happily married (honestly) I don't really interact with other women much. Plus I wasn't really that arsed, even in my younger years. I'm almost embarrassed these days when I go out and see some of the unavoidable sights of what some women chose to wear (or not wear in some cases). Fair play though; wear what you want, but also be aware that it may bring attention (warranted or unwarranted) because that's just the nature of sexual attraction, even if it's just some dribbling old drunk at the end of the bar staring at someone's cleavage or arse cheeks. It's primal but 99.9999% percent of men have evolved to understand that physical interaction is out of bounds unless explicitly invited, and that no always means no. I'm just not sure how we as a society deal with the other 0.0001%.

Yes. I watched the Yorkshire Ripper documentary on Netflix and it was a shock to see how grim things used to be, how old people in their fifties looked, how shabby the towns were. And the police attitudes were archaic. It was astonishing how uniform every senior police officers outlook was. Everyone was white, male, old, and brought up with the same attitudes and prejudices. The attitude where a woman in a pub was clearly a woman of loose morals. The fixation that all the victims were prostitutes. There was no creative thinking, no ability to see things differently because they couldn’t. That was a decaying society.

So, yeah, things are much better today.
“Things”???

And the Yorkshire Ripper is the yardstick for the society?

err, Ok.

What about people such as myself that would never convict if I knew my decision ended in a death sentence, whatever the crime? It’s not my place to kill someone.

Under present rules I’d convince based on the evidence. If capital punishment was brought back in then I would not be able to convict.
I always thought it was the judge did the sentencing and not the jury, if you felt so strongly about your inability to return a verdict you believe to be correct then most probably the wise thing to do would be to decline jury service.
