Sarah Everard murder | Wayne Couzens given whole-life sentence

totally agree but.........

If Capital punishment was available it would hopefully act as a deterrent, I appreciate this would not be so in all cases but if it spared just one life surely it would be worth it? This rapist murderer is never going to be free again (thankfully) so what is the point of keeping him alive? The crime he committed does not justify the massive costs for protection and an easy life that the taxpayer will fund to keep him alive, does it?
What about people such as myself that would never convict if I knew my decision ended in a death sentence, whatever the crime? It’s not my place to kill someone.

Under present rules I’d convince based on the evidence. If capital punishment was brought back in then I would not be able to convict.

What about all the guilty people who wont be convicted of murder because people who oppose the death penalty will be far more reluctant to find them guilty?
Good point but as was mentioned earlier in the thread, any high profile cases could be presented to a panel of judges as opposed to a civilian jury? Either way I do think the issue needs to be properly reconsidered.

I find it darkly ironic that a murderer, using his position as an agent of the state, to kidnap, rape and murder a young woman, should lead to calls for further state violence with the return of the death penalty.

We have to drum into children and young people not to go with anyone but to RUN if stopped by anybody, Teach them to stay safe undercover cops shouldn’t be touring the streets looking for breaches of Covid rules.

Our 9yr old is waking up having nightmares over catching COVID, and some school issues.
but when I was a kid we were stopped at least four times by deranged souls hanging round the park, we turned and ran home. The police went out looking for him and my sisters went in the police car.
The first time we pelted the poor soul with bricks, then our Dad ran out after him. I was about three.
Never go with a stranger just run away.

If that were the case, a girl would never enjoy a good night out having "fun" if they ran away anytime a bloke approached them.

Understandably a lot of emotive searching for a magic bullet on here but the world doesn't work like that.

Wouldn't jurors be questioned before each trial as to wether they were willing to convict if it meant the death penalty being imposed. I have a feeling this was the case before, although that could be from watching too much Crown Court in the 70s.

I'm puzzled as to what other advice they can give really? There are far too many solo cops nowadays due to cut backs so the chances of being spoken to by a single guy is high.

If you're isolated when approached what other options do you have? If you've got time you could take a photo and quickly share it but if they are bad 'uns then they're not going to stand there waiting (for a photo or for you to phone someone).

If there are people about you could ask them to just keep an eye on proceedings for a moment and to video the encounter maybe but that would make (most) perps run anyway.
I make sure that whenever my Mrs is out with friends or alone walking to always have her pepper spray and high pitched rape alarm. Both items are small enough to fit in her bag and both would certainly give her a fighting chance in the worst case scenario.
Not legal of course but we would cross that bridge if we ever got to it.

Quite possibly yes.

I have no argument to spare cunts such as this from the chair, I just don’t want to be personally responsible.

I’ve told Mrs Back not to cooperate with any single male police officers but to explain her misgivings and either drive to a police station or await a second officer arriving on the scene.

I think the majority of men do. It's called being normal and not raping and murdering women. I don't think defining men as the problem and as collectively responsible helps either.

Ultimately, the police have inadequate procedures and don't take sufficiently proactive action in removing privileges from suspended employees. To ask any normal man to then be accountable for, rationalise, justify or bear responsibility for whatever happened in Wayne Couzens's head or to be tarnished with the same accountability as him, when they have no more reasonable understanding than any woman does of people who descend to that pattern of thought just alienates people from a discussion.

I asked for some empathy and understanding as a whole and not just in reference to this case. To try and look at the issue from a women‘s perspective rather than just making it about us men and how we feel etc.

Apparently, this is not possible and it does indeed have to be about men, and making sure they don’t get tarnished with the same brush or be alienated, because their feelings matter more.

Your refusal to engage, or look beyond your own potentially hurt feelings is perhaps instructive of the problem women face.
