The moment top 4 is no longer a realistic finish Mourinho will be ditched, ergo reducing the damage he can do internally to the club. If they're hovering around 15th after a meaningful amount of games have passed he'll be sacked.
The worry is that they get someone competent in and begin to challenge for titles after Jose. The longer he stays and ensures they aren't challenging the better
