Scottish Independence

They did.

I remember the arguements over that, i just couldnt remember the outcome. feels a lifetime ago. Imho, it is right that they did.

I remember also reading recently that they wouldn't get to in the next referendum, if the uk leaves the EU before that, as their rights will not be the same.

An interesting change is in the number of 'European' families (both partners from other EU states, single persons from EU states, persons from EU states with UK partners ) who all voted No last time because they foresaw a potential threat to their situation in society. Now, however, they see perceive a greater threat to their situation should Scotland be dragged out of the EU. It is particularly troublesome for those English people who have EU partners. Not an enormous number of people, granted, but a snapshot of how opinions can quickly change.

The change i've seen btw, if it means anything, is amongst brits, in particular the english voters. Anglophobic nats!

I think Scottish independence is now inevitable, it's a matter of when, not if.

An interesting question is citizenship. The UK and Ireland (which seceded in 1922) have a common travel area and what is almost, but not quite, common citizenship. I strongly suspect that Scottish residents would be able to claim continued UK citizenship if they wished. The great question must be whether residents of other parts of the UK will be allowed to claim Scottish citizenship. Because if Scotland is in the EU and England and Wales aren't, such citizenship might be attractive.

Going off policy up here at the moment surrounding education my guess is that Welsh and Northern Irish will be offered and the English wont be.

Sums the SNP up.

According to the 2014 document, it would be available to British Citizens 'habitually' resident in Scotland automatically, along with Scottish born brits outside of Scotland. Others will meet further specific criteri etc.

Valid point on preference, as seen in the spike of irish passport applications since Brexit.

Blueinsa, you would certainly qualify, what say you, fancy baing an EU citizen after all if it all goes that way?

But why would a non-Scottish person be offered Scottish citizenship? We are all UK citizens...but you (i assume) are also an English citizen as you were born there. Therefore you have UK and English citizenship....someone from Scotland has Scottish and UK citizenship...they cant have English citizenship.

Coincidentally, i was born in England...with English parents, moving here (NI) as a child...so i cant avail of a UK and Irish passport which is part of the GFA....my wife and kids can, as they were all born here.

If the UK has a free trade agreement with the EU then, despite Brexit negatively affecting the country, a post independence England will be more attractive than a Scotland in the EU, if you’re looking to climb the corporate ladder that is.

The economy and opportunities in England will still far outweigh Scotland.

Obviously it’ll depend on what rocks your boat.

Would he though? as per my other post....ive lived in NI for 33 years (im 44)...i dont qualify (automatically) for Irish citizenship as per the GFA...cos i wasnt born here. I can apply to become an Irish citizen and then have dual citizenship...but thats a lot of money and only by virtue of being married to an Irish woman for nearly 20 years

Education specifically? oh wait, you mean Higher Education.

They dont get free access either, do they, it is just the Irish, being EU and all. It is also reciprocal is it not.

Not that i either agree nor disagree with it, but why be accurate when there is a claim of Anglophobia to imply.

This isn’t the case.

I have UK citizenship, as a British National, there’s no such thing as English citizenship.
