Scottish Independence

Then why not give it the power now?
Would the Scottish Parliament retain the right or have to return it to Westminster if not used?
Because there may be some unionists who voted SNP at the last election on the understanding that they didn’t have the power to call a referendum. This needs to be known before people vote. Just my opinion but this power should belong to the Scottish people.

Again, i agree, as with your previous post(s). im just saying, that has already happened, in 2016. And yes, agree also on dangers of the continued toxicity.
I’ve just answered this in a response to another poster.

Referendums should have generation gaps. Otherwise their impact gets diluted or there are calls for Refs for varieties of things. It could get daft.

However, the political climate is a generation apart from when they voted in 2014 and by 2021 it will be further away still. So I kind of sympathise with the Scots on this.

There will be YES voters from 2014 who want a new Ref now too.

Tough. We’re going into negotiations with the EU and cannot be having another referendum until the agreement is reached.

Your first part is totally correct.

But my point is we cannot be doing that whilst we are negotiating with the EU.

My other point is we shouldn’t be holding referendums every few years. The next one is in a generation, as that woman said in 2014.
Mate, I’m a strong unionist, I’ll be gutted if the Scottish vote to leave, but my strong feeling is that denying them the opportunity to vote on this will lead to bitterness and resentment. This will do more damage to the union than allowing a referendum which it’s far from certain the SNP would win.

Yes but when is the question?

It’s likely they’ll vote to stay but the point is we cannot hold one during this parliament.

Nor is what he said of any relevance now.
Why not? It was a statement prior to the referendum defining the timeframe irrespective of the result, agreed by both sides. It is highly relevant as far as the Tories are concerned. It will be the principal reason given why a referendum won't be on the government order paper in the foreseeable future.

Sorry, which election are you referring to (i know, so many, right)? In 2015 GE, you have a point. However, 2016, 17, and 19 the snp were pretty damn clear about it.

Yes but 'We' can.

besides, brexit is gonna get done in the next two weeks anyway.

smiley face, or whatever emoji etc etc

My point is that unionists felt safe voting SNP in all those elections because they knew an independence referendum was not in their gift. I believe this should be a potential outcome that is known before people cast their ballot.

No, we cannot.

The negotiations won’t take place while there’s an IndyRef going on and there’s no way a referendum will be called until Brexit has been fully implemented and there’s some time for the Scottish people to see how they feel, the Tories just won’t do it.

IMO independence died when the Conservatives won the majority.
