Scottish Independence

It clearly isn’t deflection, it’s directly in reference to your post.

I do know that. Scotland isn’t currently meeting the criteria to join the EU, it won’t do once it’s alone.

The Spanish will not allow it as it paves the way for an independent Catalonia, which is only slightly more ridiculous than Scottish independence.

How can you be so for Brexit but so for this? Are you for independence?
For Brexit? Are you completely apeshit?

The Spanish thing doesn't apply anymore. Their problem was Scotland as a member breaking away from the UK and staying in the EU or rejoining immediately. That wouldn’t apply now Scotland would be applying to join as an independent non member. So the Catalan comparison wouldn't apply anymore.

You’ve just proven my point.

Spain would see to it that Scotland couldn’t join immediately, even if they did meet the criteria, of which they do not and would not.

It’s fantasy stuff.

Don’t know whether Spain would object or not but the comparison is certainly different. Catalonia would be leaving Spain who would remain in the EU and they would have to reapply.
Scotland would be leaving the UK because they left the EU and would apply to rejoin.
Probably amounts to the same thing. Spain would object to Catalonia leaving them and joining the EU. I don’t see what justification they would have to object to Scotland joining. Criteria being met is a different matter.

Scotland being outside both the UK and EU would be utter disaster for the country and they aren’t close to meeting the criteria to join at the moment, as you say the latter is different.

The justification still persists after Brexit, they do not want new nations forming out of others and joining.

Is it the same though anywhere else in the EU?
The UK was a union within a union.
Scotland was a country in that Union within a union.
I don’t think that situation is anywhere else.
Now NI. There it gets even more complicated unless you tear up the GFA. That would uncomplicate things, wouldn’t it?

The UK isn’t the same as other unions, neither is the US.

It’s slightly incomparable but the fundamental is that Spain see an independent Scotland as the pathway for Catalonia. They will continue to whether the rest of the UK is in or out.

How can it be a pathway for Catalonia. Is Spain going to leave, for Catalonia to become independent and ask to rejoin. No. Scotland's situation was similar to Catalonia which worried Spain. Now it isn’t so Spain won’t have an issue.

It’s still a small new state becoming independent and joining the EU quickly. Spain aren’t going to support it. You can scream blue in the face that they will but the UK will be whole in 10 years and you’ll still be having this argument.
