Seat Counters 25/26

I think the number of games has a big effect on attendances for cups games. I am a season ticket holder and have been for over 25 years, I go to every home league game. This year was the first time i've come out of all the cup schemes. The decision was based on cost/time mainly. I'm already paying £800+ for my season ticket, with the champions league you're looking at least another £150 just for the group stages, then god knows what for the knock outs. I am a fan that likes to go to town before/ after the game for a few beers with mates and that tends to add up to +£70 each game. Again, league cup next week - £40 for a ticket, taxi home, a bit of tea, couple of beers, before you know its easily £70.

Its the burden of success that City go far in all comps generally and its hard as a fan to commit to every game nowadays, especially with work and home life too. It doesn't help that the cost of everything else has gone up so much the last few years too.

Now being honest, when you're not on the cup scheme and the team are in a bit of limbo for qualification i can see why people edge their bets when selecting the games. Do you go to the Gala game or wait to see if there is a play-off or last 16 knock out to go to? Ultimately that £70-£100 will be spent somewhere, but you'd chose the game with the higher stakes, i.e the actual knockout.

I don't think i'm unloyal for not going, but i think a fair few people will be in the same boat as above.

Loads asking for tickets on the Facebook site and we have 10000 available, what a state of affairs
I don't get it. All these fans talk about atmosphere and here was a brilliant game to go to. I've been walking through the city centre and there are Galatasaray everywhere. I takes me back to a Manchester Derby when we were in Claremont Rd singing 2-0 up and f'cked it up Galatasaray, and then we did the same in the Derby.

I never thought that our own fans would 'No Show' at our own game.

I completely agree with this. I am out of all the cup schemes now too as it is just too expensive to commit to the extra CL games up front.

They'll sit in the boardroom and look at how they can grow revenue. We are so far down compared to other English sides and the big hitters in Europe. They won't sit there with a plan to grow attendances, it will be purely based on profit. As another poster has said, fewer people paying more is fine if the overall sum is higher.

Personally, I think the membership system needs to go. I get why it would be in place for certain games on a safety/security basis but we'll have thousands of fans used to rocking up and getting a ticket on the day who simply refuse to pay out just for the chance to get tickets. That system doesn't work with us, it works at clubs who have had waiting lists for tickets for decades and have thousands desperate to go and see a game. City fans don't have that issue.

City fans whining about away fans in the home end have made this into a problem game for those who are going

"Existing Cityzens Matchday and Junior Members (as of Wed 27th Aug 2025) who have purchased 3+ home fixtures at the Etihad Stadium."

This means that if seasoncard holders no show, only a limited number of match day fans can go.

I’m not sure it was whining City fans who created this problem, I’m sure the powers at B looked at what happened at the swamp and have put these measures in place.

Have you not heard?

Regardless of whether we win 5-0 or lose 5-0, the next CL fixture will be more important
That's the reality so take your head out of the sand and start looking for the real reasons

I only live 11 miles from the Etihad but thanks to the shite public transport I'll get home at midnight

Alternatively I could drive and stomach the horrendous A6 traffic traffic and a 75 minute pre-match journey that would only take 35 on a non match day.

Also, the Ticket Office have been so obsessed with stopping Galatasaray fans from buying tickets that they've made it too convoluted and time consuming for casual supporters to buy tickets

Oh and I'm still going.
Thousands have chosen otherwise

There's always been away fans in the home end but loads of City fans were whining on here. Ideas and discussion have consequence. The no. one issue for City fans last season was tourists and away fans and now these ideas have come home to roost for us.

You stop away fans buying seats in the home end by buying up the seats.

Make it too easy for Galatasaray fans to buy a ticket or too difficult for any neutral or casual supporter to be arsed buying a ticket?

It shouldn't be a binary decision, but City have somehow made it one.
Young lad in our office, Chelsea fan but lives here and just likes football (was too young to switch in 2008 ha!), he goes to the odd City game, was there vs Brentford as an example. He was going to go tonight but refuses to be a paying member (he has an ordinary membership). He’s an English guy with purchase history and a Manchester postcode, as a general member. Yet can’t buy a ticket as that and won’t spend £35 becoming a citizen matchday member.

I’m not saying there’s thousands like him who would fill all the empty seats but he’s an example of someone who would’ve gone tonight but is now not.

Social media is awash with fans asking the same. It should be free to become a match day member and it should be easy to work out if people are Galatasaray fans or not.

Daniel with a Manchester postcode and 2 years history of buying 2-3 tickets a season at City isn’t a risk.

Yes I know the sales criteria are awkward. A lot of seasoncard holders will understandably not go because of the distance and in the past matchday fans have taken up the slack. This time that is more difficult. A lot of fans will be wary of sitting amongst away fans too.

I am very p'ssed off with this. I think we do have a problem with our support. Whether they are priced out, satiated and lazy, or something else, we do need to be aware of a trend. We can find strong candidates as excuses for why fans aren't going but we'll need another explanation for Newcastle Utd 2nd leg.

In yeas gone by I would have bitten your arm off for a chance to play Champions League football in a CL tie.

I don’t agree Marvin, but I’ll be there tonight.

City fans have become apathetic for a multitude of reasons all listed in this thread.
You could genuinely have tickets for £10 tonight and people wouldn't attend.
I am not sure how the club can get these people back especially for midweek games my idea would be offering cup scheme to citizens members
That last point is a good idea. It’s been done for FA Cup, but these are obviously all weekend matches nowadays.

I do think the wait and see element of the Gala game might take the edge off it for a few. If supporters knew in advance, ‘right, I’m off to the game tonight, win and we get a top 8 spot sorted’ it might make it a bit more appealing rather than a match when everyone in the stadium is in the dark (assuming wifi is awful), even if we’re in front.
Then again, that could happen under the previous format maybe, but not quite so easily … (?)

I've got an Evertonian mate (61 and studied at Cambridge) who would have come tonight but is in the same boat as your Chelsea mate.
Similar story and even travelled to Highfield Road with me for the FA Cup defeat in 1985
Manchester postcode but too many hoops to jump.
