Self-employed & Coronavirus

I've been self-employed as of a few months ago... I have no previous year earnings. There will be plenty of new self-employed people too. I think, and hope, they'll put up the SSP or Universal Credit an awful lot for a while.

I’m in the same boat. Things would have to get vey desperate before I would claim UC so the chancellor hasn’t really offered anything that would help me and any others. That’s said, I am glad he has provided a safety net for employees.

That would make no sense. There is no point in shutting down businesses and paying workers to stay at home to stop the spread of the virus and leave 5 million out on a limb having to still find work and potentially still spreading the virus because they have to pay mortgages and eat.

True Bob. The work I’m doing I can limit contacts with customers but I still have to be alongside co-workers.

Nothing at all mate. I also paid close to $200.00 per week getting massage therapy out of my pocket.

I’ve had a similar situation mate with sprained ankles. It wouldn’t have been of any help to me but when I saw the doctor she said my injuries weren’t bad enough to be off work. I’m yet to come across the people who pay for their trees to be reduced or gardens maintained at walking wounded pace lol.

I think the government are right looking after the ' workers ' first, I'm sure they will sort something out for the SE. By being SE you kind of have to accept the rough with the smooth, its part of the job.
I called round at a clients, he has a pub, restaurant and accomodation and his head was in his hands trying to get through to the various agencies....without any luck. I genuinely felt sorry for the guy.
If you can hang in there wait a while until the government has everything in place and speak to your accountant, don't do anything rash and without qualified advice.

Decided to start a separate thread about this, as it affects many on here. The government announcements on subsidising wages yesterday were a welcome measure, and will no doubt have given much needed reassurance to many.

The self-employed (and renters) have been hung out to dry somewhat though. Someone on PAYE earning, say, £30k pa will now get £22.5k subsidised earnings but a freelancer or someone self-employed who was earning £30k is now only entitled to less than £5k pa through Universal Credit. Surely that’s not fair.

It is absolutely not fair and reflects completely the position i now find myself in.

Pressure seems to be mounting on the government to readdress this. Fingers crossed they do so, and quickly.

I said last night that they could do 80% of national minimum wage based on 40 hrs to at least start to put minds at ease.

I am a new business having set up last October, registered as a Ltd company but with no self assessment history but of course lots of PAYE before taking the plunge and as a renter, i want to know if my landlord claims a 3 month break on the mortgage will that by law be passed on to myself?

I dont want to be treated special or differently but fairly would be nice and the minimum expected.

Said somewhere yesterday, I do think the will is there to do something and wont need much pressure. The how and what is the issue for them. Through HMRC would be my guess but as @blueinsa said he’s a new start up with no self assessment record. For people like me with premises then the local authority rates system is the vehicle, for employers their HMRC employee records is the vehicle. As blueinsa said at least minimum wage would be a start for self assessors but don’t know how it helps @blueinsa in his position. Think we’ll hear something Monday , Tuesday though.

I am a sub contractor and I pay 20% in tax every week. I payed £7000 last year and over £8000 so far this year. My NI gets payed yearly. Now if I have no work they want to give me £94.00 a week.
The weekly family shop comes to more than that.
With our fair share ov benefits cheats it really pisses you off that they get looked after before we do , dont even have to sign on now meanwhile we continue to seek work and get out and do it
