Self-employed & Coronavirus

I’ve no doubt that there will be something for the self employed, HMRC had no (or hours) warning of the 80% wage payments, the VAT holiday etc and are building these processes up in days whilst the vast majority of staff are working from home and dealing with a massively increased customer contact/demand at the same time. It’s not a case of flicking a switch and these things happen.

It’s worth pointing out that the governments in the past 10 years have slashed HMRC numbers, frozen wages and barely invested in the department’s infrastructure so it’s a miracle things are starting to move in the first place.

As a tory hater I'm actually pretty surprised/impressed with the speed of the govt action to support employees. I suspect there may be action to come for self-employed based upon last years earnings/tax return, but employees are where the immediate crisis is because the govt needed to put this support in place in time to reassure companies before the next pay run and before redundancy notices started popping through the letter box.

I agree, i think they couldn't realistically ask people to stay at home and shut down public facing businesses without offering an answer of some sort and some assurance to employers and employees. And that needed done asap.
Like everything else, including dealing with the virus itself, every single measure and decision is purely about buying us all time.
They do that incrementally, lets hope it comes next for everyone else currently left behind.
Fully agree everyone should be equally taken care of.

I’ve had a similar situation mate with sprained ankles. It wouldn’t have been of any help to me but when I saw the doctor she said my injuries weren’t bad enough to be off work. I’m yet to come across the people who pay for their trees to be reduced or gardens maintained at walking wounded pace lol.

Too bad you're not closer mate. I have a spreading juniper that needs some serious attention.

On another note, I was just informed that our job sites are shut down indefinately.
Off to the how to keel busy thread. : )

i thought today's measures and announcements might see the self employed get addressed. it seems it is instead securing the stability of rail/transport companies, so that they can be shut down.
it certainly seems to be how the gov are doing it. Offer reassurance, then ask to shut/reduce. Maybe they are working through proportional percentages that most affect social distancing, which might mean self-employed might be down the line.

How hard can it be to award 80% Of declared income on tax returns...

This but it does nothing for me as a new Ltd company owner who hasn't done a self assessment yet?

I suggested 80% of the national minimum wage based on 40 hrs as a start or they go back to my PAYE record.

The wife and I own a small commercial laundry, our customers are hotels,B&Bs, rentals etc etc , 3 of our girls left last year due to various personal stuff, marriage, illness and college. We have 2 girls ready to start but that wont be happening
....Just done some number crunching and I reckon as ' as it stands as of today ' we have a 6 month cushion. However with travel embargoes/curfews imminent, we could totally dry up, ie , not even turn the lights on....in which case our 6 month cushion become 6 months survival. The knock on effects for the tourist industry doesn't stop there, people will not be willing to spend as much, if indeed they have anything left to spend, holiday leave will almost undoubtably have been used up so people wont be flocking to these areas in any great hurry. Hey ho, maybe next year...

Just spent 3 hours on the phone this morning going round our clients....business decimated in 3 hours. Temporarily hopefully but boredom threshold reaching critical already.
