PEP: There’s no doubt about the quality of Sergio. The big clubs in Europe have a lot of strikers. Now I have many options.

PEP: In Brazil, Gabriel played on the left side. Both can play together

Aguero is trying hard, I'm not entirely sure why people have started thinking he isn't - perhaps it's because they'd rather he just needed to try harder instead of actually adapt his game which is much harder (and less likely) for him to do.

He's running over 50% further than under Pellegrini, and he's now running as much as everyone else in the team, as was covered in loads of newspapers around November.

Not only is he trying hard, but his pressing has become much more effective, and he's now doing some very effective and quite complex pressing movements detailed in the Spurs match report here.

The fact is, Aguero is doing a lot of what Pep wants him to do - that's not the problem anymore. The problem is that he's in very poor form in front of goal, and it seems he can either play Pep's way, or score at his normal rate. And even when he does do that, he's still not got the passing/link up ability, or speed that Jesus has.

His goals have all come against poor teams and he's got 1 assist in 24 games - compared to Jesus' 2 in 2.

Perhaps this lack of goalscoring edge is because he's focusing so hard on the new stuff that he's not being natural in front of goal, who knows - but his effort isn't the problem, hasn't been for a while now.

You'd have noticed that back in August/September/October when Pep was actually unhappy with his workmate and what he was giving the rest of the team, he told us about it.

He would happily tell the press that Sergio needed to give us "more in the buildup", run more, work harder, but he's not saying that anymore, he knows Aguero is doing what he asks, he's just not doing the rest.

Good post. I love Aguero, like we all do. I think my point is judging what I've seen him do this season compared to what Jesus has done in his two starts. Aguero has had some excellent games, and carried out Pep's instructions but as you say he's not scoring as frequently. This break might do him good. He should have the fitness (and given his body a chance to recover and catch up) so hopefully he can cover that extra ground required to press the opposition but also be able to have the energy to get into scoring positions, take the opposition on (as we’re used to seeing) and score more goals.

This season was always going to be challenging for our players. Particularly after such a lacklustre previous campaign. I’m willing to give most players time to adapt and Aguero is far too good to write off!

In my opinion it tends to be those who support from afar and don't have the same affinity to the players as many of the match going fans.
I don't mean that derogatory and it's great that our support has become as far reaching as it has, but that's how I've always seen it on here. There are of course exceptions.
Some just love a new shiny toy and are quick to cast aside the older, used ones. In some cases it might even be the correct decision. In Sergios case it's most definitely not and I look forward to him leaving this club as our all time leading scorer and with the legendary status he deserves.

I still like you by the way. :-)
Yes you did Pablo. Yes you did :p

I was just gonna say American but thought I'd keep it broader.. :-)

Seriously though I didn't - it seemed quite logical that overseas fans wouldn't feel as close to the players and would look at the situation in a far more clinical way.

Different strokes for different folks.

Lol. Just kidding. As I read that I thought you pretty much could have taken out the word 'those' and replace with 'Dax' lol.

It's not his work-rate, or even form in front of goal.

He's a selfish player - even at his best he rarely passed unless he thought he'd get it back for an attempt on goal. Plenty of strikers are like that, but it is a problem for some times of team / tactic. He's always taken too many touches. Compounded by the loss of pace. He can't just waltz past players.

Something has gone wrong in his mental game. He isn't anticipating... maybe it's more that he's not adjusting. All he's thinking about is that opening for a shot. The rest of his game has vanished. He dawdles so much it's painful to watch. Passing is an afterthought. He's not aware of what is around him. The stop start stuff is more like start stop. Kills momentum. Out of sync with the teams movement. Crucially - for me - he almost never receives the ball on the move. And rarely 'goes in' on a defender. They have a relatively easy time of it. Keep him in front of you. One more criticism - how many dozens of pin point, fast, low balls has Kolarov delivered into the space behind defenders, and no-one is EVER there. Who the hell else is going to do it if not Sergio?

He has this look.... kind of bemused but blameless. Staring at some imaginary point in the distance. Seems sort of self-absorbed. Not engaged.

I hope he gets it sorted. He has wasted time... I don't know why. But it doesn't matter. He's got the best moments of his career to come.

Think he will be gone in summer if Real come for him. Would suit him and club if club can get replacement (realise there are less than a handful who could fill his boots)

He has turned down Real and every other club for 6 yrs running,he and his agent have both said he is very happy and is not leaving, neither of them have bullshitted us before so i don't doubt either of them now
