Sergio Aguero - 2017/18 performances

As I said from the start, he simply does not fit Pep Guardiola's team. He still does not cut off passing lanes effectively, his finishing is erratic which was his truly elite attribute, he is lethargic after consistently closing down the opposition and it affects the rest of his game and his link up play is still not up to the standard that Pep Guardiola would like.

There are still moments when he should pass but instead shoots from improbable angles. It must be frustrating for Pep Guardiola to watch. In Aguero''s case you cannot teach and old dog new tricks. Whilst Jesus has his issues, his age means that he will be more willing to adapt to Pep Guardiola.

Jesus makes the team a lot better. It is what it is. He covers passing lanes better both in terms of speed and body positioning. He helps with overloads where it is needed in order to create numerical superiroities, be it at the flanks or at the centre which helps the team dominate and retain the ball.

He is better at playing combinations than Aguero. He is also far more flexible than Aguero and does not need to be played centrally to be effective. Against United his flexibility allowed Sterling to essentially play as a withdrawn striker.

It's baffling that people still cannot see these things yet undertandanle as Aguero is a club legend.

Was speaking with my old fella after the match and we both love Sergio but agreed it was the right thing to do to bring Jesus on with fresh legs for the benifit of the team and winning the game
Also both saying how ( and I know this is looking to far ahead ) that if we got to CL final and we’d bought Sanchez in January and Aguero didn’t start that game it would break his heart

But doesn't answer the question of who should replace him, besides Sanchez if he comes,if Aguero does not accept the kick up the arse, continues to sulk and leaves, you surely would be gutted if that happened
I think anyone would be but Kun has earned the right to leave any time he wishes (should he wish).

fans of the manager who go with what he thinks that's all,and so far he is calling it right, but winning a trophy or 2 this season will need the input of Aguero, without question.
Well the manager has credit in the past and I’ve never doubted him. He’s showing this season that knows his stuff.

I agree Aguero will make a huge contribution to the cause this season, if he’s happy to work as much as his team mates and not sulk. I don’t think he will sulk and I think he’ll score 20-30 goals which is great.

sanchez is the same age, doesn't score as many and is a winger who would rotate with sane, nothing to do with sergio
sergio and gabby are different players, huge age difference and stages in their career, neither playing as well as they can,we need both and competition is a brilliant thing to have
kun was pissed at being subbed,so the fuck what,if he came off skipping with a big smile on his face he would be hammered for that
we needed fresh younger legs for the press that is all

I bloody hope so

You mean the starry eyed fans of the manager who has us playing the best football in our history? The one who's style and philosophy has us dominating the rest of the league and has guided us to 16 league wins on the bounce? If we're referring to the same manager then yes, I'm more than willing to trust his judgement on any player.
You crazy bastard talking sense.

Kuns main threat is that goal he scored against Swansea last week. Its his trademark move and no one does it better but compact and better defenders cut it off.

Yep. But he's nowhere explosive and fast enough now to do it regularly. That's why better defenders, fast and explosive enough easily stop it.

Kun is still capable striker and in this team less capable will score lot of goals but he lost loads of stuff that made him little genius before and it's sad to see at times how is he not able to dribble pretty much anyone, taking too many touches to control the ball perfectly and stuff like that. I don't know how people just don't understand that as much of the legend he was and as much of the good striker he still is, he is nowhere close to what he was, nowhere close to have guaranteed play time and nowhere close to be irreplaceable.

Jesus is way out of the form currently too, he's far away from finished product but the fact is we just play better with him. Give me that or playing Kun for any reasons, specially emotional ones, I'll take us playing better 100 of 100 times.

Because one older poster stated it from the off as he may go to every match but his football knowledge is firmly entrenched in the 70’s.
Yeah, I know someone stated it. Just don't understand its relevance to a discussion about the validity of a substitution made in a game.

Mind boggling stuff here.

The bigger problem is that Sergio was a 25 league goals a season man in a team scoring 80 goals a season.

Now he's in a team that could score 120 and he's still looking like a 25 goal striker.

Pep's shown at Barca & Bayern he has no problem with scoring dominated by 1 player, but in a team that creates so many chances, that 1 player needs to be getting 40-50 in all comps.

At Bayern:
13/14 Müller 26, Mandzukic 26, Robben 21, Götze 16, Ribery 16, Pizzaro 11
14/15 Lewandowski 25, Müller 21, Robben 19, Götze 15, Ribery 9
15/16 Lewandowski 42, Müller 32, Robben 7, Vidal 7, Coman 7, Costa 7, Götze 6

At Bayern there was not a domination from one player - the 15/16 season was special because of the injuries.

And at Barca Messi outscored everyone 2:1

So he's shown he's ok with both.

While I think Pep has had some reservations about Aguero from day one i do think he's tried to meet him half way and given him every opportunity to keep himself integral to the team going forward - and there's still a chance that something will permanently click with Aguero over the next six months. Pep couldn't be any more clear about what he expects of Sergio and we've seen he's capable of playing that way when he really wants to. He's not being forced out of the club but equally, Jesus will continue to get the nod ahead of him if he's showing signs of not being fully on board.

Some reservations, sure. Kun is a known entity from his time in Spain, the knock was never about his ability but whether he could be counted on. I said this during the Monaco tie last season, I believe Pep lost trust in the player and already envisioned his departure. The failure to land Alexis only delayed the inevitable from summer but it's still coming IMHO
