Often, when an event is hyped up beyond all expectations, it is an anticlimax.
Not so in the case of Sergio’s debut for Manchester City.
Before Sergio was linked with us, I’d never heard of him, but those who had were raving about him on the Transfer Forum.
Because of this, I couldn’t wait to see him in the flesh, and I was hoping that he’d come on for at least a few minutes during the season opener against Swansea. Following his involvement in the Copa América in the summer, no one was expecting Kun to start the game.
As it turned out, Sergio came on with about 20 minutes left.
And what a debut it was. Two strikes - one a typical Sergio far-post poacher’s goal, the other a thunderbastard from well outside the box - were separated by a brilliant assist for Merlin.
It was a fantastic start to his time at Etihad and a prelude to what was to come over the next ten years. The goals just kept coming, including the most iconic one in Manchester City’s - and possibly English football's - history. If Sergio had left at the end of his first season, his legendary status would have been assured.
But he stayed and gave us many more magical moments, breaking Eric Brook’s club record and adding another 80 to it.
He broke Alan Shearer’s record for the number of Premier League hat-tricks, and his minutes/goal is a mark that is unlikely to be broken.
All the best for the future, Sergio. I would love to see you back here in some capacity, though I doubt it will happen, but whatever you choose to do, you will never be forgotten by supporters of Manchester City.
Thank you for all of the goals and brilliant moments you brought us.
