Sergio Ramos

Good player Ramos. Not sure why others don't rate him. If he came to us he'd rival Kompany as the best defender we have

would be quite happy to have him, good player
but equally satisfied if it served to make the rags over pay for him by our mere interest, something they've done for years

Manchester Cityare poised to enter the battle forSergio Ramos, according to our sister paper The Mirror.

The Real Madrid defender is at the centre of a bitter contract wrangle with his club withManchester Unitedtrying to prise him away.

The Reds have already had two bids rejected by Real, who the paper say want a staggering £64m for the 29-year-old centre-half.

United are themselves digging their heels in over their £35million valuation for keeper and Real target David de Gea.

Pedro Riesco, who works with Ramos' brother and agent Rene, said: "With everything that has happened it will be very difficult for Sergio Ramos to stay at Madrid."

City are said to be poised to take advantage of the stand-off between United and Real with a bid of their own.

The Mail report that Real Madrid starGareth Balehas met City CEO Ferran Soriano in New York.

Bale, linked with a move to the Etihad, took time out of his post-season vacation to watch the New York derby at Yankee Stadium on Sunday night.

Andrea Pirlo and ex-Blue Frank Lampard were there for the MLS clash between New York City and New York Red Bulls.

But it was Bale who posed with the New York City shirt alongside the Blues chief during the Red Bulls’ 3-1 victory.

Meanwhile, City strikerEdin Dzekohas again been linked with Roma with his Bosnian international team-mate Miralem Pjanic saying Dzeko "would run" to join him in the Italian capital.

We're probably just trying to make sure the rags have to pay a ridiculous fee for him.

Hopefully this is either the rags trying to set up a 'we won at buying Ramos' scenario when he goes there, or it's someone being naughty and trying to jack the price up. Great player, but the guy will be 30 soon so the thick end of £30m is a lot to pay imho.

Not sure where this age thing comes from but have you seen modern day centre backs? People wrote John Terry off 3 years ago and how good was he last season?? Sylvain Distin is another one who has been immense and is 37 for god's sake. Ramos has just turned 29, same as Vinnie. Let's say he makes it to John Terry's age as good as Terry is now, which is 34 years old, that's 5 seasons away. 5 years is absolutely ages. These players are so well conditioned nowadays that this age concept is bullshit - you're telling me Lampard and Gerrard couldn't still be doing it in the Prem? They're centre mids too, never mind the ripe-friendly centre back.

That's not an attack on you fella, just this ageism thing really grinds me. And no, I'm not an old sod sticking up for the older players, I'm 23.

Well I AM an old sod, and I share your views. The guy is a superb defender at the peak of his career. Four years is an eternity in terms of the turnover of players, and he'd make a massive contribution. He's the most effective player United have been looking at, and the thought of stopping them getting (in effect) another Vidic has to add to the attraction.
