Not sure if that is a serious post or not. The issue clearly is that yes, canals are generally straight. Problem is, people know that but when intoxicated through drink/drugs or both and in the dark, people dont walk straight and they dont pay enough attention. They may think they are walking straight, but they arent. A little wobble or stagger, recover, walk straight again. But not in the direction they thought they were inMe neither. You don't take a wrong turn into a canal, you may fall in pissed up of course but someone suggested it is lost people ending up in them.

Locks apart, what I don't get is these canals in the areas where you fall in are not even 3 foot deep. Even pissed up surely you can just stand up????

well, if you fell from a height into 3 feet of water, would you be guaranteed to not badly injure yourself or knock yourself out by hitting the floor?
