Set Pieces

There was a great deal of similarity to their four goals. Each came from cut backs/corners where we defended deep and left acres of space outside the penalty area. Each goal they had unmarked players waiting to run onto the ball completely unchallenged. I get that we have to protect the goalkeeper but we have a defensive midfielder and three others who are perfectly capable of filling those spaces and tracking runners. Defensively it was amateur hour.

The defending of all their goals was lacklustre to say the least. Leeds were throwing themselves in front of our shots on Saturday but yesterday our players were turning their backs, not running to the ball quick enough. Hands behind back (Dias is obsessed with this).

We maybe need to leave a couple of players up to make the box less congested. We leave two up, they leave 3 back. Chelsea did it well against Arsenal and really thinned the box out which then helps the keeper.

Considering we have some smaller players then I'm surprised we don't give this a try. It's not like they're helping defend the aerial balls too much.

Nearly every corner was delivered into what I call the unplayable area, right under the nose of the keeper. I never understood targeting the near post, get it into mixer!
In order to create mayhem from flick ons, that's why Haaland plays near post when we're defending (also makes it harder for opposition players to get a decent deeper ball in).

Funnily enough we did exactly the same for a couple of Sunderland corners yesterday, one of which resulted in them hitting the post.

However, because we kept a clean sheet it creates the impression that we're improving

just rewatched the game and saw that. I think we did improve yesterday but its still something that needs addressing.
