Set Pieces

We scored the 3rd most goals from set pieces, including corners, last season. We scored 16 and Arsenal who scored the most scored 20. I can’t find this seasons figures.
As we all know, stats can be read anyway you want them to.
We are talking about when a player takes a direct corner aiming to get it into the box. Not one of our players seems able to beat the first defender.

There more than one way to skin a rabbit.

There’s your gut feeling and then there’s the data.

The data states we were the 3rd highest scorers from corners.
If Foden takes a short corner to Kdb who squares it for Gundo to score, that's a goal from a corner.
We were talking about when a player goes direct, they rarely beat the first defender, for an elite team that is very poor.
It's a pity we can't split the stats to show how poor we are at it.

Sadly, half the corners that go in should be fouls…and half of those should be penalties!

This Arsenal (et al) tactic of crowding the keeper (holding, blocking, bumping, etc..) is bollocks and Arsenal have been getting away with murder.

That said, there’s a certain beauty in a big center half taking a good run at a cross and nailing it into the roof of the net!

Rather than complaining about corners, though, I’d just as soon we give the opposition every throw-in we earn, because we usually give it away anyway, so why not set up for it defensively from the get go?!

And, speaking of opposition throw-ins, if we made it any easier for them to find a man, it could be considered cheating or a gambling fix!

And, lastly, when was the last one we did a cheeky free kick move? Last I can remember is sliding it through along the ground to Alvarez to score…and he doesn’t play here anymore!!!

Surely Arsenal's has got to be higher this season? Their bullying tactic of crowding the keeper seems to work every game at the minute
Theirs might be higher. I can’t find stats for this season, but fans in general overestimate how hard it is to score from a corner.

Beating the first man is often bandied around. There’s a tiny margin of error between getting the ball over the first man and the ball going too far and out for a throw in. Whipping a ball in has tiny margins.

Also, the defending team have a set up to defend most corners well. Arsenal are outliers at the moment until teams find a way to negate their tactic, which won’t take much longer.

The idea of a short corner is to get the defending side out of their drilled set piece defensive positions.

Given how many corners we get, we should have 33% more goals than Arsenal from corners if we had the same conversion rate

Other stats showed that Arsenal scored 9 goals from 122 corners for this season (can't find the same for City) so City would have been expected to get 12 goals from corners if we were equally as proficient ! Anybody know how many we have actually scored from corners ?

Interesting analysis here on corners (goals, type by team) though for only part of the season and needs updating
