Theirs might be higher. I can’t find stats for this season, but fans in general overestimate how hard it is to score from a corner.

Beating the first man is often bandied around. There’s a tiny margin of error between getting the ball over the first man and the ball going too far and out for a throw in. Whipping a ball in has tiny margins.

Also, the defending team have a set up to defend most corners well. Arsenal are outliers at the moment until teams find a way to negate their tactic, which won’t take much longer.

The idea of a short corner is to get the defending side out of their drilled set piece defensive positions.

We have taken 162 corners, so our conversion rate currently stands at 1.2% this season.

We certainly have a low percentage, but I wouldn't necessarily say its a problem for us. I would rather us keep possession from he corner by playing it short, than boot it in the box and have a significant chance of losing it. Especially considering we are easily countered at the moment.

Stones has scored twice from corners (Arsenal annd Wolves) and Kovacic did against Fulham. There may be more, but I can’t think! Gundogan vs Feyenoord too?

Yeh... just realized I was looking at an article from October for the goals scored. Haha. Adding Stones vs Wolves and Kovacic vs Fulham that makes it 2.4% in the premier league, which coincides with exactly what you said. Definitely prefer us playing them short.

The biggest variable for me is the aggressiveness of the centre backs.

Gabriel and Saliba have been turned into uber aggressive players. They get on the end of more balls as a result.

Our best two centre backs at corners are Ake and Stones. Weirdly, Dias is more aggressive, but less of a threat.

This was from early in the season. It's clearly gone down since, but it's been something City have been very good at over the last few years. I vaguely remember an article about Liverpool having a throw-in coach, and since he'd arrived, I believe City were the only team with better retention.

I've had the protractors out and it's a huge margin...

The short corner has the advantage that it usually draws two defenders out of the penalty area (though West Ham didn't bother on Saturday) and allows options. The player taking the corner can still swing it in to the penalty area, perhaps with two fewer defenders there. If played to a teammate, the teammate can bend the ball in or out toward the goal area, or just touch the ball for the player taking the corner to bend it in from a better angle, or play it back to him (don't be offside) but best to use the options before the opponents close the ten yards. Another attacker can peel away from the penalty area to add another option. But once the second player has opted for an option, he should move centrally to help defend against the inevitable breakaway (if we're talking City).
