Setanta crisis: US-based Blues opinions?

In Canada there are three channels that show EPL games:

Sportsnet shows 1 game on Saturday morning (afternoon in UK) - Almost always a "Top 4" game
The Score shows 1 game Sunday morning - Almost always a "Top 4" game
Setanta shows at least 3 games live Saturday and 2 games Sunday, with the others shown tape delayed throught the afternoon/evening. All for $15 CDN a month.

If it weren't for Setanta I'd be lucky to get more than 3 City games a year, which means resorting to shitty, unreliable feeds on my computer. Long live Setanta!

I admit to having no idea what Setanta US is such a good product, but in the UK it's bobbins. I love it. I can watch Gaelic Football, then a PL game, then Super-14, then Heinken Cup, a game from Russia, another PL game, State of Origin, then some Aussie Rules, game from Ligue Un, another PL game, some Hurling...it's a cracking product, for what, 10 squid a month? I've nothing against Americans (I mean, I'm married to one), but the value of being able to watch a TV channel and not hear a single American accent is fucking value imo. Irish, Welsh, Kiwis, Aussies, South Africans, English...and no Americans, quality.

Again, no offense, I live amongst you, but I do need a break from your accent.

RIP Setanta? :-(

Firstly, I'm not American. ;-)

I will admit that there's nothing worse than "American" accents on football broadcasts - even worse is the more-is-better commentating style used in North America. In fact, broadcasters for our local Toronto club are typically UK ex-pats with British accents and styles.

Lastly, I hardly see how Kiwi accents are an improvement on anything! Like you, nothing against them, but.. (or should I say "egeeeeesnt theeeeeeem"?)

Well ..... FWIW ....... Down here in Jamaica, on my cable, I get FoxSoccer, Setanta, and the 'local' sports channel - SportsMax. I get everything that everyone before has mentioned, as regards footie, plus a lot of the cricket from all over.

I am paying US$5 / £8 per month for all of that, and also get all the ESPN coverage, included in my basic price, along with "GolTV", a Spanish-style Setanta.

Agree with all the comments re the commentators etc. ........... and Tommy Smyth knows what he can stuff in his "Auld onion bag" !!

In a way, we get too much coverage, as I can't be arsed watching everything that's available !!!

I had Setanta for a while just to get more City games. I don't get into all the other sports on there. I'm not an ex-pat though. However, I did start to watch Ligue Un games, and enjoyed them.

I definitely like Setanta pre-game commentators better. I can't stand to watch the FSC commentators.

I agree with what you said about all the american soccer stuff on FSC. As a good american I try to watch MLS, but they have a hard time putting two passes together and by the 20th minute I'm snoozin'. Can't even begin to think about WPS!

Plus it's funny how I'd much rather listen to english commentators. American commentators just don't seem to fit. I grew up on american sports and with other sports it's the same- the commentators seem to think they have to fill up the airwaves with their inane comments-- that's one thing that drove me to follow the premiere league-- got sick of commercials and commentators whose personalities took over a game. Soccer commentators have the same problem- sometimes they're talking about something totally irrevevant to the game while a goal is taking place. English commentators let the game speak for itself and don't feel a need to talk about totally irrelevant stuff.

My cable company doesn't carry Setanta here in the US, but I have the Setanta online service, it upgraded dramatically a few months ago and its fantastic. Got that on the computer and Fox Soccer on the digital cable, FSC is an absolute must now because they are getting the Champions League in a few years from ESPN!

How much do they charge online mate? I actually wouldn't mind subscribing to watch more football and GAA also.

I would hate to have just Fox Soccer Channel, or FSC and ESPN.

Thats all Ive got....

:(

;)

Yep me too.

TBH, the only game I can think of that I didnt get a decent stream for (if not on telly) was the Notlob game at the end of the season, the majority of the others shady managed to hook us up with.

Hopefully, the streams will just keep getting better, cos I cant get a dish where I live!

if setanta goes tits-up expect fox to put its prices up . surprised about the commentators i always rated them as the best for sport with John Madden as the doyen

From what I understand, Fox actually has all the rights to the Premier League in the U.S. and sublets about half the games to Setanta (U.S.) for a fee. This makes sense for them because on Saturdays there are way too many games for them to show anyway.

If Setanta goes under, I don't know if there will be another outlet that Fox can sell some of the games to.

Champions League is all on Fox for the foreseeable future, and I believe there is some talk about upgrading to HD before tto long. I do know the Champions League Final is going to be on FX HD to reach a bigger audience than FSC.
