Setting ourselves up differently (merged)

Re: Width and pace, that's what we need

Clinical yes, but last year Aguero had more time and didn't always have to run through 3 or 4 players to get into the box, with some width we would open up some room, we need someone who will get to the byline and cross the ball back with pace, I love zabba, but his crosses are normally from the corner of the 18 yard box and are floated in, easy pickings for defenders
its all about being clincal thats the point.we scored early in alot of games last year the game opens up hence more room for players to run into, had we scored 1st yesterday we,d of probably won comfatble,we start games to slow at times but we seem to create 4 or 5 good chances in early parts of games we havent been clinical enough, van persie will haunt us in this respect imo he,d of been the difference, big mistake not getting him mancini knows this

Silva, Tevez and Aguero need room to play, teams put 10 men behind the ball and then hit us on the break. We get more frustrated and end up leaving just one man back, thats when we are most vulnerable. What we need is width and to recapture the pace we had early last season, we don't break out at all, ever. We knock the ball around at the back and then pass 10 times before we even get to the half way line. We need to play with a much higher tempo, break fast and in numbers and have some width play to open room up for Silva to do his magic. Sounds easy, but we did it last season, we now need the players to do it this season.

100% correct .Its obvious that when we took Spurs and united apart it was with lightning quick breaks and strikers having time to finish. Now after god knows how many passes the strikers have their backs to the goal with 2 defenders up their backsides.
The system is clearly wrong Aguero, silva etc haven't suddenly become mediocre. The manager selects the tactics, pace and formations. Get a grip Bob its obvious - does he not read BlueMoon ............

Re: Setting ourselves up differently

for when yaya is at ACON;

--------------------HART--------------------
------ZABALETA----KOMPANY----NASTASIC------
-MAICON------------------------------CLICHY-
--------------MILNER-----BARRY---------------
--------SILVA-------------------TEVEZ---------
-------------------AGUERO--------------------

assuming everyone was fit & not elsewhere;

--------------------HART--------------------
------ZABALETA----KOMPANY----NASTASIC------
-RICHARDS-----------------------------CLICHY-
--------------YAYA-------BARRY---------------
--------SILVA-------------------NASRI---------
-------------------AGUERO--------------------

for me, this season has been how it's been simply because of injuries.
richards, nasri, aguero, garcia, zabaleta, maicon, balotelli, kompany, kolarov, milner etc. have all had injuries, with some being more serious than others...

we haven't had a chance to get into our rhythm at all this season, but i my gut feeling tells me we'll be playing alot better in the second half of the season, the one that matters the most

Re: Setting ourselves up differently

I'd like to see us give this a go:

Hart
Zaba-Kompany-Nastasic-Clichy

Milner-Yaya-Silva

Nasri-------Tevez-------Aguero

Have Yaya in a holding role similar to the one he played at barca, push the full backs up and get the ball into the front 3 as quickly as possible

Pretty much this with a slight change

-RICHARDS-----------------------------CLICHY-
------------NASRI---YAYA--BARRY---------------
----------------------SILVA--------------------------

Re: Setting ourselves up differently

(Based on currently fit players)

On Defence:

................................Hart
Kolo...........Kompany........Nastasic........Zaba
.....Tevez....Yaya.......Barry.....Silva....Aguero
.............................Balotelli

On Offence:
............................Hart
...........Kompany....................Nastasic
.............................Barry
.............Yaya...................Silva
Kolo.....Tevez......................Aguero.....Zaba
.........................Balotelli

Subs:
Pantilimon
Rekik
Lescott
Milner
Razak
Sinclair
Dzeko

Tevez and Aguero need to be freed up to make runs through the channels, while Balotelli needs to be fed the ball on the last man while on the run. Each of these players has made a "world class striker" reputation on playing this way, but our slow build up is KILLING those reputations and strike rates.

Some people think that our midfield is brilliant, because it can play 20 short passes in a row. All well and good IF it was actually opening up defences, but it RARELY does, and once or twice per game does not cut it. We need to break out of defence with PURPOSE, rather than working it out to the wing and then bringing it back around the horn a few times, allowing opposition defences to both get back and organize. When we see ourselves in trouble, it is USUALLY when other teams break quickly on us and we FAIL to get back and organize ourselves, often with our "midfielders" believing they are really forwards! We need to make it clear to the team that we have ONE FORWARD who has no defensive responsibilities other than pressuring the two central defenders to release the ball forward into our 5 man midfield....that will win it back!

Why are City's players "too good" to fight to get the ball back BEFORE it ever gets to our back four? You know, like Barca's world class players!!

It's time to start with a five man midfield

...................Aguero
Silva.......................................Nasri
....................Yaya
.............Barry......Milner
Clichy...Nastasic...Kompany...Zabaleta
....................Hart

Three central midfielders with two wider players joining them allows us to have more width since the wide players have to worry less about covering the central zones. If the opposition go to close them down then Yaya potentially has a lot more room to make forward runs and even if he is unsuccessful, Barry and Milner are there to sure things up at the back.

Our possession based style means that a two striker system rarely works because there isn't much chance for good link up play when the opposition is playing a flat back eight.
