.. was watching my brothers sunday league game yesterday and saw a goal disallowed for offside. A striker was nearer to the goal than the midfielder he passed to, who was therefore behind him. Both the players were goalside of the last defender who was about 10 yards away. The striker passed the ball forwards in front of both himself and his team mate. The midfielder ran onto it and scored. The ref said that even though the player who scored was behind the striker and the ball when it was passed, because the ball was played forward its offside.

Been looking online to try and shed some light on it but cant find anything, can anyone confirm whether what the referee said was right or if the goal should have stood? Didnt affect the result as they won 4-1 anyway, just curious as i thought the goal should have counted.

The ref is correct if he had pulled the ball backwards we would have been on.

Yep. Offside can only happen when the ball is played forward.

EDIT - I Posted this later in the thread but just thought I'd stick it on the first page as it's a simple answer to why I (and lots of other peopel) were wrong to say it's offside...please read the rest of the thread though - it's a classic:

It was onside - I was deffo wrong earlier.

Fifa laws of the game:

A player is in an offside position if:
• he is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/affederation/federation/81/42/36/lawsofthegameen.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/affeder ... gameen.pdf</a>

So, if he was behind the ball he was onside.

The key is he was behind the ball!

If the bit I have highlighted is correct, then clearly the goal should have stood. Are you SURE the striker was not offside when he passed the ball forward?

EDIT: Actually, just realised that you wrote GOALSIDE!! Therefore, the ref was correct - sorry!!

Goalside means he was between the defender and the goal meaning he was in an offside position, hence so was his teammate, therefore as the ball was passed forwards then the player who receives the ball is now not only interfering with play but also is the most forward opposing player(the player who passed the ball is now irrelevant in terms of being active as long as he doesn't touch the ball before the other player receives the pass).

Which is why I edited my post as soon as I realised he wrote 'GOALSIDE'
