Settle an argument...

It is very basic.

Yes - whether the ball goes forward or not is irrelevant, it's the position of the midfielder relative to the ball when it's played that's the important part. The goal should have stood.

As someone who used to referee I agree with you.

That said whenever anyone asked me to explain the offside law to them I'd always reply 'I haven't a fucking clue'.

No, he wrote that BOTH players were goalside of the defender, so surely he is offside?

As I understood the OP the striker had taken the ball past the last defender so he is onside and so is the midfielder as long as he's still behind the ball when it's passed.

He said the midfielder who was passed to was behind the striker who passed (therefore behind the ball).

If you are behind (or level with ) the ball you can't be offside under any circumstances, just as you can't be offise in your own half. Goalside doesn't change anything.

Yep onside if behind the ball doesn't matter if the entire defending team stands on the halfway line you cannot be off side if you are behind the ball

Hmmm...reading it (yet) again, I think you may be correct....;o)

I never knew that.

So if the defending team all stood on the half way line and let two attackers burst through unchallenged and the one with the ball stopped it on the edge of the penalty box. His mate stood a foot behind him and he touched it forward and moved out of the way, his mate would be onside?

Well I never. It must hardly ever happen, I guess.
