Seville

I know your OP says city break but if you fancied a day at the beach with some restaurants you can't really go wrong with Chiclana de la Frontera, within an hour and a half of Seville. Doable by train to Bahia Sur (Cadiz) and then a short taxi, or should imagine bus. Only reason I mention public transport is in case you want a day on the beer outside the city.

Lucca, Sienna, Florence, Venice, Verona, Modena, Rome etc in Italy (loads of other nice places too but Milan isn't one of them).

Valencia, Sevilla, Cordoba, Granada and Madrid in Spain.

Looks like the OP is sacking off Italy in favour of Spain on the basis of the poor reviews of Milan, Seville is nice but I'm not sure I'd take it over some of the places in your Italy list.

In terms of stadia to visit there's not that many in Italy that are too inspiring outside of a match day (unless you are into brutalist faintly fascistic architecture of which there' a fair bit!) but then I think it's true of most places with the exceptions of the obvious big beasts. On a match day it's a different kettle of fish and you don't need to go to a big stadium to have a great time. Venice and Siena grounds are not much to look at but are in brilliant locations. Siena's ground is basically in a hollow very close to the city centre - went to a night game and everyone just climbs up the hill and spills straight into the city centre, very cool. Verona 'interesting' too but more to do with dodging the headcase Hellas fans.

Seville is stunning, just wondering around the centre and sampling the tapas and local beers is incredible. One tip, there is a boutique hotel facing the cathedral, go up to the top floor and there’s a bar with stunning views and away from the crowds.

I was waiting for the plane to be mentioned. Stay in Seville it’s stunning.

I took my partner to Seville when we played in the CL. I booked an apartment right opposite the Castle and Cathedral overlooking the square. Kept it a Secret. The lift came straight down to street level. We both got in it. It stopped on the top floor and opened straight into an open plan apartment. She walked around it a burst into tears of happiness. As for Seville, BEAUTIFUL! Go!!

Seville, Valencia, Bilbao and Madrid all great cities to visit in Spain.
Another place in Spain I have not been to but heard brilliant reports of is San Sebastian.
Barcelona is one of the few cities I have not enjoyed.
Caught somebody trying to pickpocket me and numerous reports of others having the same problem.
San Sebastián is absolutely beautiful .
The beach is huge, clean and safe . The food is off the scale and the hotels are reasonable . Definitely one of my favourite city breaks and you can twin it with Bilbao quite easily.
And there’s a Mancunian fella called Dave plying his trade nearby . Too small for the Premier League but he’s not too bad .

Brilliant, brilliant city.
Did I mention it was brilliant.
vibrant, safe, friendly, food is er brilliant, flamenco dancing if that’s your thing. Alhambra and Cathedral are both BRILLIANT.
Love it.
we normally stay in the centre within stone throw of Cathedral which is …….
I think you mean the Alcazar - the Alhambra is in Granada.

Lovely story mate. We had a lovely airbnb right opposite the cathedral a couple of floors above a starbucks. It had its own balcony you could sip a chilled sherry and watch the world go by. While we were there they had some kind of festival to celebrate the city connections with south america. It was huge and took about two hours to pass under our balcony. One of my very favourite cities.

I went to Milan for the Atalanta game

Didn't spend enough time there to take in everything and it pissed it down most of the time, so my opinion may be a bit clouded... but I found it to be quite a dull and dreary place

Now I've done the San Siro it's not a place I'll be going back to in a hurry

Was there for the same game and would agree with this.

I love Italy but Milan just didn't really grab me.
We spent the following day in Bergamo and I preferred it there.

Don't think you can go wrong with somewhere like Seville or Porto though.

Absolutely love Seville, been there many times. First went in 87 and seen it change a bit since then.

My favourite place is the magnificent Plaza De Espana. The last time we were there we went for a walk at dusk and the locals were practicing for a religious, I think, parade. We could hear singing, drums and trumpets in the distance as they walked around the square. It was a really atmospheric scene and a highlight of our stay.

Seville is a fantastic place. My daughter studied at University there for 18 months so we got the opportunity to go 4 or 5 times. Just be wary of what time of the year you go as it gets hot and I mean seriously hot in the summer. 42 degrees is not uncommon. Seville is effectively located in the bottom of a small valley and it's not near the coast so there is no cooling breeze. Therefore the humidity can be very high. Having said that I really do recommend you go.

Thanks everyone.

I changed the title of the thread from "Milan" to "Seville" yesterday largely due to all the advice on here.

It' looks as though we'll be booking Seville imminently.

I appreciate the warning on the heat - we don't really have an option on when we go because it's the honeymoon. We've been to Turkey in August and Cyprus during their record temperatures so will be prepared. I'll have my 22 year old City bucket hat to shelter my bald head.

I actually read most of the comments on here to her last night and she was convinced by you all so I dearly hope this isn't the most meticulously planned clarkie in Bluemoon history.

Nice. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Here's a short Seville video from my YouTube channel:-

Went out with a girl who worked there in the late 90’s and stayed there with her for about three weeks.

Had a great time, but it would be long way down my list of places to visit in Italy.

Quite industrial and not very friendly were a couple of enduring memories. Went back in 2019, along with Florence, Bologna and Naples and felt it was the least likeable, interesting place of the four.

The Duomo is incredible, and there’s plenty of decent places to eat, but I wouldn’t recommend if you could go to (for example) Seville, Porto or Munich for the same money.

How imminently? Has Tolmie said anything?

Seville is incredible. Got engaged there. She proposed to me (obvs) although she only just beat me to it. We were so pissed that when we went for lunch the next day and we were squaring up, we only just realised that we were in the same place that we got engaged!

Fucking brilliant city. Great tempo to it and some great bars and restaurants too. Not too expensive either iirc.

There’s a symmetry here because we were pissed last year when we sort of agreed to get married and are now going to Seville!
