How can we develop a style of play when we have constantly changed managers and players in the last 3 years? How can any team spirit be fostered during this time when home grown players are not sure of their places?

We should not have sacked Hughes but that argument is redundant, however we have to give Mancini time because if we don't give a manager time our millions will have been wasted because we will never develop a style of play.

I would expect any manager 6 months into his job and 80 million later to know what players he is buying to fit into any given formation. For me i though he was going for a 4 2 3 1 but last night look like he was 4 1 4 1

It needs to be sorted - that was a decent team last night who took it seriously - most of them were first teamers and we got twatted by there second string.

I agree we keep Mancini barr relegation - we cannot change manager and then spounk another 100m next transfer on window to buy more players. I am hoping to see a first 11 for Valencia.

Given

Boatang
Toure
Lescott
Kolorov

Barry
Yaya

AJ
Tevez
Silva

Ade

Team looks good besides our 4 rated CB being named to it.

And I could see Milner in ... if we have said player.

Does Mancini really need to coach them in 'passing accuracy' at this stage of their careers?

And to say that was our first team and we got twatted by their second string is just twisting the facts to fit the moan.

its not about coach passing, but encourage possession. if he was a manager that valued possession, you would see it reflect in the pre season games. Look at teams like west brom and doncaster, they have much poorer players, but because they have managers who want to play possession play, you see when they play how they keep the ball on the floor and are patient. in the end their quality lets them down, but they try. In the end i dont think you can succeed at the highest level without being great at keeping possession. and thats the main problem with mancini and how he sets up the team.

Are you serious??

Mancini has won Serie A. Italian teams keep possession as if it was a religion do you seriously think he's going to come to the PL and then abandon a style of football he's been brought up with all his life. If your going to post Sh1T then please supply some bog paper with it.

I don't give a flying fcuk what we do in friendlies either but it would be good to see us play with some sort of system, after watching all the pre season friendlies we seem to be playing the same way over and over again without trying anything.

I can't work out what were trying to do, If I'm not mistaken it looks like 'the management' are just sending the players out onto the pitch to see what they can do as if each and every one are them are on trial, maybe they are but surely Mancinci and co have seen enough of them by now to see who's upto scratch or not.

If not then I'm very worried for the new season as we should be looking at some sort of formation now considering the season starts in a fortnight, I just hope the other new players get to play in the rest of the friendlies , well they have to surely , the American tour I hope was a way of weeding out the deadwood.

After watching last nights game my main concern was the way Hart kept playing long balls to Adebayor who never won a ball all night, try it once or twice maybe but every time Hart got the ball he aimed for him, he must have done it over 20 times and still kept on at it, that shows me he's either a thick cnut or still has a lot to learn, I'm beginning to think its the former as he did exactly the same thing under Eriksson until he was told to pack it, he did so and we retained the ball a lot more, so I can't understand why he's resorted to giving the ball away again friendly or not, especially now considering the price we have paid for defenders and holding midfielders, surely we can play the ball out of defence instead of keep hoofing it.

My other concern was Adebayor who keeps shurking headers, even when he's the first man with the defender behind him he ducks out, he did it last year and he looks to be continuing this year, if i and probably most of this board can see it why can't the coaching staff, maybe he's a shit bag and scared of getting hurt, even so the rest of his team mates can obviously see this so why keep aiming for him when his back is to goal as he just keeps losing the ball, funny thing is he's not bad at heading crosses unmarked so its not like he can't head the ball.

Bridge was my only other main concern as he seems to have lost a yard of what was allready a slow pace and gives the ball away far to often, even simple 10 yard passes look beyond him. same too i suppose of Barry, they are beginning to resemble one another in terms of play but at least when Barry loses it there's usually soembody there to mop up.

I see a few have also been knocking Kompany, he may not be top notch but at least he plays with his heart on his sleeve unlike quite a few players we have at the moment , we need players like him, Zab and De Jong to lead by example , they might not always get in the team but they're a must for the squad imo, as we have collected at least half a dozen players on big money who's heart's don't seem to be in it.
Hopefully those American trials will have weeded them out and we can get shut, the next few weeks will be the most important of the new season as we see who gets shown the door and who comes in, then we'll have a better idea of how we'll fare in the forthcoming season.

I'd be quite happy if we were to win things playing boring football, at least initially. Start with a solid defense and build on that.

The problem last year under Mancini was that we were trying to play defensive football but weren't very good at it. We never really looked like one of those annoying teams that can soak up pressure and then almost inevitably score on the break to win 1-0. It always seemed that we either won comfortably or not at all.

In Mancini's defense he was starting from a fairly low base when it came to improving our defending. And he didnt have his own players.

I think the key to improving our defensive play could acctually be the signing of Silva. Last year when we got men behind the ball we lost any attacking threat. We didnt have the type of player that could catch teams out on the break in the same way that say Arteta does to us. The only way we posed any real threat was by getting our wide players well forward which made us weak at the back. With Silva in the team we should be able to keep a more solid defensive shape and still win games.

Sorry guys but I cannot take anyone serious who refers to the forward line as offence.
These people I would refer to as microwave fans..... 2 minutes in.
We are going to have to get used to these so called experts talking TOTAL BOLLOCKS!!!
As for Kompany not being top notch, what do you people want. Our defence improved dramatically when he stepped inyo the centre back role, or did i imagine that fact as I imagine all the plaudits he was getting from the press etc.
Some of you must be a constant dissappointment to you families with you stupidity.
I know football is all about opinions but some people seem to completely ignore facts.

So you think there's no p[roblems there whasoever about the shape of the team and the teams ability to keep possession and look fluent?

And at what point in any of the friendlies have we played a team that will resemble the team that will turn out on the 14th. Oh thats right we havent mainly because a lot of key players are not with the team.
Do youself a favour and look at the recent signings and look at the styles of play that the teams they come from play.
Everyone of them played for teams that keep the ball, pass it around then quickly turn to attack. Is that how Germany destroyed England with Boetang in their team. I shouldn't have to tell you how Barca play. Valencia again pass the ball around and keep possession. Silva is the type of player who can play either side of midfield and then produce a piece of magic.
The truth is only RM knows what style we are going to play and as a ball hasn't been kicked I can't see why the doom mongers are out.

Some good arguments here.

I, for one, was disappointed with the ball retention too, even considering the sending off. Reckon the fullbacks should have been quicker to offer width, but then they might not have reached 100% fitness yet.

Really interested to see what happens against Spurs - particularly with regards to Johnson. We started with Vieira, Barry & Toure in the middle (which was good), and then, following the sending-off, the left wing (Jo) was sacrificed in order to keep three in there (Barry, Toure & Zabaleta - and also a good move, in my opinion, although it didn't work out too well...).

Now, what are we going to do when Tevez comes back, and Silva comes in? A 4-4-2 with Johnson-De Jong-Toure-Silva is too exposed through the middle.
