Sheffield Utd (A) post match thread

Mahrez is stealing a living, completely ineffectual and doesn't work hard enough.

Defence looks great but Cancelo will always give someone a chance.

Bernie more like his old self in the second half.

And, whisper it quietly, De Bruyne is becoming something of a liability because he needs a rest and is out on his feet, impacting his work rate and decision making.

Walker man of match for me.

Did I mention how shite Mahrez is?
Mahrez just doesn't suit our style of play at all. He is the most frustrating player we have, and I don't think that's changing anytime soon. I'd prefer to see Foden in his spot or Bernardo .

I read somewhere post game De Bruyne ran 13 kms yesterday with his tracking back and what not. So his workrate is there if that stat is correct, which seems to be affecting him going forward. Plus he is tired like a lot of players atm.

I still think we should throw Barca a offer for Messi in January. He's clearly out the door there and would eliminate the Mahrez issue and support Kev and others. Just my thoughts after watching last night and our other games

You've been questioning his work rate and fitness levels intermittently for the last year or two and I really can't wrap my head around it. He's one of the hardest working players in the team and last time I saw you say it was in the middle of a season when he equalled the assist record and won player of the year so I don't think it's hindering his decision making.

I don't see anything wrong with him other than him not quite pulling off as many audacious passes so far this season.

Agreed, he’s having to force certain passes/situations as our tormentor in chief, I noticed he switched sides on several occasions yesterday, having Phil in David’s old position should negate the need for this, can’t be easy playing right side knowing Mahrez won’t return the ball or he’ll just run it outta play

Most teams employ 5 at the back with 4 directly in midfield. Just no space anymore.

I think we need to take a step back to take two steps forward.

Everyone crams their defensive third against us because we overload them for 85 minutes a game. We've got effectively a front five, fullbacks who push on constantly, a defence that pushes all the way into the other half and a goalkeeper who sits 45+ yards out of his goal ready to collect any long ball. On top of that, we've done way with the natural wingers who stretch the defence and have gone for two inverted wingers who further congest things in the middle.

Going back to having to proper wingers and playing the more defensive minded Ake, might convince the opposition that they don't need to park the bus quite so much and that there's a bit of space to roam down their right side. We won the title with Delph and Zinchenko as left backs and they were similar in that they didn't bomb forward much throughout the game. Pair that with two proper wingers and we can take advantage of the added space. Like yesterday, stop playing two slow, deep lying midfielders as well because that's not doing us any favours in terms of space, either. The other thing we're missing from our title winning seasons is the intensity of the press.

I don't know, I'm rambling and it's all hypothetical until it isn't.
