He is merely reacting to the dare-one-say it, relgious militancy, ungenerous spririt and smug self-satisfaction with which some atheists maintain their conviction that there is no God and that people who believe otherwise are either stupid, wicked or both.
I can certainly understand the intuitive attractiveness of the proposition that we live in a harsh, meaningless universe devoid of any overriding justice to Manchester City fans, but as a Gillingham supporter it is my abiding faith that my reward lies not in this world but in the world to come that keeps me going.
